Quitting Smoking…How To Give yourself The Perfect Detox

Occasionally I see clients who are very healthy in all respects other than smoking. It’s the last thing they need to change. Many of them liked to do an occasional detox, but the futility of the process often escapes them.

Even if you have not the slightest interest in healthy practices you can give yourself the best detox in the world by quitting smoking. A traditional detox done properly takes on average six weeks. Within six of quitting your body will undergo an important detox process.

The term detox is often thrown around but many haven’t a clue as to what it actually does. I despair seeing the latest trend in three day or seven day detoxes most of which are just some crazy story in a magazine or a promotion by a health food shop.

Don’t worry you don’t have to get technical quitting will automatically start the process, but their a few things you can do to facilitate the process. If you have been smoking for years it’s not just your lungs that are congested.

Every cell in your body has been affected by cigarettes. Your liver and kidneys, the major organs of waste processing, in particular have borne the brunt of years of toxic exposure.

To support a faster return to better health you can help the process along. Drink extra water, a lot more if you don’t currently drink much. Six glasses for a couple of weeks will help. This helps your kidneys and ensures your cells are properly hydrated.

That 1000mg of vitamin C per day and two cups of green tea will help the first phase of liver detoxification.

A not so social alternative.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are now being banned in more and more places. ‘E- smoking’ is no longer allowed on any form of public transport and coffee shops and public buildings are now following suit. this is the experience in America and recently it was announced in Australia that the same rules about public smoking will apply to e-cigarettes.

I’m confused!

Some time ago our government was talking tough about reducing smoking, at the same time it was announced that as a part of our investments in our Australian Future Fund, we as a caring nation would be investing in a very lucrative area. That’s right we are pouring our cash into cigarette companies which focus on the massive smoking market in developing countries.

Strange new habit.

It has been reported that on a quarter of young people who use e-cigarettes, do so to quit smoking. Most do it because they like the taste or the feeling they get from these chemical cigs. It seems that this Chinese invention is creating a new set of bad behaviours.

New rules and regulations.

Recently it was announced that e-cigarettes would be treated the same as regular smokes as far as legislation is concerned. No more point of sale e-cigs at your petrol station, they will have to be stored behind secure locked doors.

Soon e-cig smokers will have to join the ranks of regular smokers away from cafes, restaurants and public places. This is an interesting decision, because most smokers of e-cigarettes are trying to avoid the real thing, not wanting to smell tobacco smoke.

There are two problems with these pretend smokes. 1. You are inhaling some chemical of unknown effect into your body, and 2.  the action of smoking is so related to real cigarettes that most people just return to the real thing fairly quickly.

Recently my wife and I had dinner with three friends. After each course they all went outside for a cigarette. I watched them join other smokers and bond in the ritual of inhaling smoke and poisonous chemicals while freezing in the cold night air.

When they returned to the table they brought with them the stink of smoke. That was off putting enough but the thought of willingly inhaling the pollution seemed like madness.

Quitting Smoking When You Know It’s Just A Habit

Knowing how to quit smoking when you realise that it’s just a habit, but you keep on doing it anyway, is easier than you might think. A surprising number of smokers have already reached the conclusion that their smoking is just a habit and not an addiction. They know this because the nicotine patches and quit smoking medications, have failed to work for them.

In fact most report having used nicotine patches and still continue smoking, at the same time, simply because they were having a coffee or a meal, it’s because they have such a strong association with smoking and food and drinks.

If nicotine was the only problem then it would be logical that all smokers would give up smoking, using nicotine replacement therapy alone. Yet this is certainly not the case, for the vast majority of smokers.

So if the problem is just a habit then why don’t smokers just change their minds and quit? Think for a moment about the things you do in your life, those things that you do out of habit, perhaps the way you eat, the way you speak and so on.

Now think about how many cigarettes you have had in your life. Lets say you smoke twenty a day, and you have smoked for twenty years, that’s one hundred and fortysix thousand cigarettes in total.

If you have a smoke when you wake up that’s seven thousand three hundred times you have woken up and had a cigarette.

If you smoke when you have a coffee break in the morning and afternoon, that’s fourteen thousand six hundred cups of coffee and cigarettes.

I’m sure you are getting the picture. These habits are very ingrained, they have been re-enforced over and over into your brain thousands of times. It’s no wonder that you have difficulty quitting.

If you are reading this it’s because you work in construction of some form or you know someone who does. It may seem a little strange to single out manual workers but there is a single clear difference.

It’s about access to smoking. If you work in an office you have limited times to smoke but on a building or construction site in most cases you are free to smoke whenever you choose. This means that you can smoke for no particular reason.

By that I mean you can light up without needing the nicotine, or without any emotional connection.

So if you want to know the secret to how to smoke when you work construction, the answer is that there is no secret but there are three important considerations.

1. You have free access to smoke.

2. There may be a lot of other smokers around you.

3. You may socialize with these same people, having beers after work, and smoking will be a big part of this.

You could quit your job and your workmates but that’s a huge price to pay. Of course if you continue to smoke you may become ill or die. That is surely a bigger price to pay.

How To Quit Smoking – Stop Making It So Hard For Yourself

It may sound crazy that anyone would intentionally make quitting smoking any harder than necessary. But I can guarantee that if you want to know a secret about how to quit smoking, then just stop making it so hard for yourself.

Henry Ford once said, that if you think you can or you think you can’t, then either way you are right. Here in lies the problem. Many smokers think they can’t, or think it will be very hard.

They say things like:

1. Cigarettes are my friend: Wow talk about a lousy friend.

2. I’ll be lost without them: Nothing quite so comforting as lighting a toxic cigarette.

3. I need my cigarettes to think: Nothing like 4000 toxic chemicals flooding your brain to help cognition.

4. Cigarettes help me when I’m stressed. Nicotine causes an adrenal response, flooding your system with adrenalin and cortisol, nothing good about that.

5. Smoking helps me relax. Again the nicotine does no such thing. It’s taking time out that is relaxing.

6. I like smoking when I eat. Just wait until your food tastes like food and not an ashtray.

7. I always smoke with alcohol. Have a look around, notice the non smokers are doing just fine, without smoking.

8. I put on weight if I quit. Smokers are no less thin or fat than any other group in society. Smoking actually makes it hard for your liver to break down fats properly.

In fact one of the best pieces of advice I can give to a smoker is to just observe non smokers going about their day. See them when they are relaxed, stressed, busy, thinking, bored, eating or drinking.

The non smokers are managing just fine without any assistance from cigarettes. Focusing on all the reasons you think you need to smoke is just making it very hard for you. You can’t quit when you think your life is so dependent on smoking.

The first thing to do is to look at the list and just think about it. Start to realise that smoking doesn’t make anything better. It doesn’t help you to relax or thing, or drive better or hold a better conversation on the phone.

All it does is cost you a lot of money, make you smell like an ashtray, and strip away 14 years of life on average. And did I mention the slow painful lingering death.

It can be hard enough to quit smoking at the best of times, but if you want to know how to quit smoking when you also suffer from depression you are going to need to get support on several fronts.

Timing is important. It is best to choose a time when life is reasonably good, so that the person has more emotional resilience to cope with any pressure from quitting.

By combining therapies and by seeking multiple points of support a person with depression will be able to quit smoking in most instances. Severe depression will be more of a challenge but with the right management it is still a good chance of success, getting everything lined up is critical.

How To Quit Smoking – With Plain Cigarette Packaging

At the time of writing, the Australian government is about to introduce a law requiring cigarette companies to market their products in plain green packaging. I imagine they are thinking that, when a person asks how they can quit smoking, they think about the packaging.

Tobacco giant Phillip Morris is threatening to sue the Australian government.

Past efforts such as grisly images on packaging, no smoking signs and scary television ads have had little impact on smoking numbers. Smokers freely admit that quite often seeing an advertisement with a smoker dying in a hospital bed actually makes them want to smoke.

One client while watching television with his son, reported that as his young lad was becoming upset and pleading with him to quit, all he could think about was going outside to light up a smoke.

Quit smoking signs in airports are proven to make people want to smoke. Seeing them just makes the craving centres of the brain light up.

Quit smoking campaigns have little effect. The drop in smokers has come from increased taxes and more importantly increased social pressure.

Quit smoking campaigns are designed to stop new people from taking up the habit. But smoking in the demographic of young adults is on the rise. It is not surprising really because in a world of increasing rules and regulations smoking is a way for a young person to rebel.
