Knowing how to quit smoking when you realise that it’s just a habit, but you keep on doing it anyway, is easier than you might think. A surprising number of smokers have already reached the conclusion that their smoking is just a habit and not an addiction. It may sound crazy that anyone would intentionally make quitting smoking any harder than necessary. But I can guarantee that if you want to know a secret about how to quit smoking, then just stop making it so hard for yourself.

Henry Ford once said, that if you think you can or you think you can’t, then either way you are right. Here in lies the problem. Many smokers think they can’t, or think it will be very hard.

They say things like:

2. I’ll be lost without them: Nothing quite so comforting as lighting a toxic cigarette.

3. I need my cigarettes to think: Nothing like 4000 toxic chemicals flooding your brain to help cognition.

5. Smoking helps me relax. Again the nicotine does no such thing. It’s taking time out that is relaxing.

6. I like smoking when I eat. Just wait until your food tastes like food and not an ashtray.

7. I always smoke with alcohol. Have a look around, notice the non smokers are doing just fine, without smoking.

8. I put on weight if I quit. Smokers are no less thin or fat than any other group in society. Smoking actually makes it hard for your liver to break down fats properly.

In fact one of the best pieces of advice I can give to a smoker is to just observe non smokers going about their day. See them when they are relaxed, stressed, busy, thinking, bored, eating or drinking.

The non smokers are managing just fine without any assistance from cigarettes. Focusing on all the reasons you think you need to smoke is just making it very hard for you. You can’t quit when you think your life is so dependent on smoking.

How To Quit Smoking When You Suffer From Depression

It can be hard enough to quit smoking at the best of times, but if you want to know how to quit smoking when you also suffer from depression you are going to need to get support on several fronts.

Depression has both organic and emotional components. The emotional can be assisted by professional therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy. The organic aspect is usually well managed with specific selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitor medications such as Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil.

A person with depression will need the support of their medical specialist to assist and monitor their medications and their emotional state when they quit cigarettes.

Zyban, also sold as Wellbutrin or Voxra known as Tricyclics, are also antidepressants which are used as quit smoking drugs. Unfortunately many of my clients have found these tricyclics make them feel unwell and usually can’t persist with them.

Managing stress will be critical for the depressed smoker, as they are likely to have even more emotional connections to cigarettes than most people.

But at home support may be required in the interim period until a person truly believes that they no longer need to smoke. Their old routines will be strongly ingrained, and they may need to busy themselves at times. Having support will defiantly help them through this time.

Once a person is free from smoking for a few days to a few weeks they will start to feel an increased sense of wellbeing. By being able to breathe easier will a person will be able to exercise more. Exercise alone will reduce the severity of depression.

Plus as levels of wellbeing increase most people will do more and more to help themselves. Such as improving their diets. Depressed people tend to eat poorly. Junk food diets are known to increase difficult mental behaviour.

Timing is important. It is best to choose a time when life is reasonably good, so that the person has more emotional resilience to cope with any pressure from quitting.

By combining therapies and by seeking multiple points of support a person with depression will be able to quit smoking in most instances. Severe depression will be more of a challenge but with the right management it is still a good chance of success, getting everything lined up is critical.

So often, people talk about waiting for the right time in their lives for major change. Having a family, getting married, changing jobs etc. But waiting for the right time to quit smoking is like waiting to win the lottery on a Saturday night.

It could happen but it’s highly likely that it won’t. The fact is there is no good time to stop cigarettes, and there is no bad time either, all the perceived obstacles and reasons are just excuses to avoid the issue, and face up to the challenge.

If you talk to anyone about their lives, there always seems to be some drama happening or about to happen. So to quit smoking it’s more a matter of just making a decision and biting the bullet.

So if you are delaying, perhaps you could sit back and have a good think about what your reason or excuse is for not quitting until some specific time. I’ve heard people say that they can’t quit until the busy work period is over, or an event has passed.

I even heard one client say they couldn’t quit until the end of the financial year. They weren’t even in business for themselves, but they had set a date off into the future and suddenly the day had arrived. To their credit they booked their appointment but their partner chickened out and set another random date into the future.

For the partner it simply indicated that they weren’t yet ready to quit. So in fact they were being true to themselves, because the worst possibly reason to quit is to please someone else. Simply stated, it just won’t work.

How To Quit Smoking If You Have A Brain Injury

Successfully quitting smoking if you have a brain injury is a matter of acquiring help from a support team. Input may be required from several sources. In hypnosis we have a rule, you can’t make someone do something they don’t want to do.

So quitting must be a clear choice of the individual, and then they need to follow through with any strategies they are given by their therapist.

The problem with a client who has a brain injury is that they may not be quite capable of making a clear decision to quit. Those who care for them want to help them to make them healthier. Smoking may be not only a direct risk to their health but also a fire risk from smoking indoors and in bed.

Frontal lobe injuries, which can result from accidents or assaults, can cause a person to have reduced inhibition. With regard to smoking they can often be very heavy smokers.

Even fairly highly functioning people can have inhibition issues such as not recognising common courtesies and etiquette. They may not necessarily heavily addicted to nicotine but certainly habituated to frequent smoking, often smoking without thinking about it.

Another difficulty is that the popular quit smoking drugs such as Zyban and Champix may not be suitable for a person with a brain injury. Many non brain injured quitters have enough problems with these mind altering drugs. It would be potentially dangerous to expose these people to such chemicals.

This leaves nicotine replacement therapy. The real statistics for patches and gum show these to not be very successful at all. A problem would be that the client continues to smoke while wearing patches, resulting in them becoming ill.

Traditional hypnosis focusing on quitting smoking may not be appropriate. But gentle conversational hypnosis targeting stress management, may be critical to achieving a successful outcome.

As a rule quitting smoking using hypnosis is done in a single session. But when a brain injury is involved it may be more appropriate to do a series of short sessions with each one addressing a single aspect of smoking.

This may not be easy, and will most likely require some serious commitment of the part of everyone involved. Some may argue that the person should be allowed to enjoy their simple pleasure. How To Quit Smoking – If You Are A Couple

Quitting as an individual is difficult at times, but if you are in a relationship it can be made easier or harder depending on your partner.

If one person wants to quit, the other may resist but promise to only smoke outside. But once you quit you will be hyper aware of the smell of smoke on their clothing and hair. This can be a difficult situation especially if you had a habit of spending time together for a drink and a smoke.

You may feel you will want to stop these times, which were previously shared with a cigarette but it is important to keep your rituals going.

The only thing to ensure is that you both want to quit. If only one is quitting only to please the other then it is doomed to fail. Then there will be arguments and the reluctant quitter will soon take up cigarettes again. The stress of this can put pressure on the one who is keen and they may fold under pressure.

The ideal situation is when your partner and you decide to quit together. You choose the same day to quit. You offer each other support and you can continue the times you spent communicating together, but without cigarettes.

This is easy because you both are free from the smell of smoke, you can get rid of the ashtrays and clean your cars.

Plus you can offer each other support, if the going gets tough. Prior to quitting you can map out the times you each think will be the hardest and be prepared to back each other up during the tricky moments.

Of course you don’t need to be a couple to help each other. Two friends can support each other just as well.

It’s advisable to quit on the same day. In most hypnosis sessions there is a pre hypnosis component. It is best if you both attend together to hear the exact same things from the therapist. Then the hypnosis is best done separately.

Many couple quit in order to prepare for having a child. It is best to do this at least four months before trying to fall pregnant. 8 Ways To Remain Sane When Quitting Smoking

A typical symptom of quitting smoking is to feel moody or angry. The temper becomes short and those around you can suffer to the extent that they may encourage you to start smoking again.

The key to quitting smoking and to remain sane is to recognise that your brain has to undergo a period of adjustment. After all you have been feeding it a cocktail of nicotine and thousands of chemicals for years. You take these away and your brain feels as if it’s being attacked.

Within 48 hours there is no sign of nicotine in your body and brain. Unfortunately many smokers completely expect to feel grumpy and they just give in to these feelings.

So how do you handle the transition period back to a normal non smoking brain.

1. Recognize that you have been self medicating, using cigarettes to manage your stress.

2. Accept that most of the world doesn’t need this drug to manage stress. Ask yourself how does a non smoker handle stress. Non smokers are running around being upset, they aren’t flying off the handle at any little upset. Well most don’t anyway!

3. Understand that while smoking does give a short stress relief it quickly causes an adrenal stress response that makes you more stressed than when you started.

4. Actively prepare your stress management before quitting. Start walking, doing some deep breathing exercises, take B vitamins and ensure you are getting enough rest.

5. Improve your diet, include green leafy vegetables to increase your magnesium levels. Plus include oats for breakfast to support your nervous system.

6. Quit smoking using advanced hypnosis, this is the gentlest way to quit, by breaking all your emotional connections to smoking plus helping you to emotionally and mentally cope with the nicotine withdrawal.
