Quitting Smoking…Who Wants More Carbon Monoxide

July 22, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

Carbon Monoxide, is a simple combination of one molecule of carbon and one of oxygen, which has no taste or colour, yet has a profound effect in your body.

While it is true that you produce carbon monoxide (CO) naturally in your body, like most things there is a natural optimal level.

CO is a common pollutant, most well known as the gas which released from car exhaust systems which can kill.

Some friends of fine who are dedicated smokers, like to cite the example of coffee drinkers sipping their brew at roadside tables. They argue that they are breathing in more pollution than smokers.

Unfortunately this is just another example of smoker rationalisation.

The concentration of CO in a smoker’s blood stream is ten times the amount seen in a non smoker in the same environment. The reason is simple, when you smoke you are directly breathing in high levels into a closed system.

The CO coming out of the cars passing the roadside cafe is being diluted by air movement. And depending on wind direction it may not even reach you as you enjoy your coffee.

The effects of CO poisoning, yes you are poisoning yourself, chronic low level exposure effects can range from headaches, vertigo, flu like feelings, depression, confusion, sleep problems, nausea and  memory loss to name a few, through to death from acute poisoning.

The good news is that when you quit smoking your CO levels will fall to close to zero in just one week! That’s right in just seven days you can replace the CO in your blood , which is toxic, with oxygen which is life giving.

So this is either another powerful reason to quit smoking or another inconvenient fact which must be filed away in the do not mention part of your brain, for which you will need to create an excuse, such as my friends did with the coffee drinkers.

Let’s assume you  have had enough CO and it’s time for oxygen to be your friend again, then hypnosis is the easiest way for you to once again to get your fair share of oxygen.

Freeing you to have more energy to pursue life, better sleep to enhance that increased energy, a more stable mood allowing for less stress and more happy moments, all of these effects and more can be enjoyed when you use hypnosis to stop smoking and reduce your carbon monoxide.

Quitting Smoking…What If You forgot To smoke!

Hi Future Non Smoker

This sounds impossible right? But my aunt who was a heavy smoker until recently, suddenly stopped because she forgot she was a smoker.

She has Alzheimer’s disease, this isn’t what stopped her, in fact she was smoking heavily because she lost track of how many she smoked per day. The ashtrays and smokes in her environment were a constant reminder.

But then she fell and broke her hip. After a week in hospital she asked her husband for a smoke. He replied, why would you want a smoke? You quit twenty years ago. She just agreed and hasn’t smoked since.

A little deceptive, certainly, yet in the interests of her health, he did the same when she came home and she asked for alcohol. So what happened to her nicotine cravings, developed from fifty years as a heavy smoker.

Surely she would of had strong uncomfortable feelings, maybe angry, perhaps weird sensations in her stomach, it would be expected that even though her short term memory was poor she would have had a bank of memories of smoking in the past, but she had none of these.

Does Alzheimer’s negate the effect of nicotine? which according to many is the a highly addictive drug which causes strong withdrawal symptoms, so strong that many smokers attempt to quit several times before finally succeeding. These so called physical symptoms should persist in spite of memory.

The reality is It’s not surprising she felt no cravings, it’s because the real cravings are powerful subconscious connections to smoking, not some chemical addiction over which you have no control.

Don’t believe it? Then think for a minute about when do you smoke? After food, coffee, on the phone,  when driving, when you need to think, etc etc. What do any of these things have to do with nicotine?

There is another way to forget to smoke, another way to be free from the clutches of cigarettes, without having to struggle with cold turkey, plaster toxic patches on your body or even take mind bending pharmaceuticals.

Hypnosis is the solution, the safe fast way to change the memory in your unconscious. It can be done without any of the stress or trauma of experiencing a life changing disease such as Alzheimer’s.

However for most people the effect of forgetting about smoking is no less powerful. Many have no connection, some a little and some have to work a little harder, but all in all your best option.

Quitting Smoking…Imagine A Picture Frame

July 14, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

Imagine a picture frame, and within that frame there is a picture of you smoking, perhaps you’re on the phone. Now imagine another frame and another each with a photo of you smoking in one of your typical situations.

These frames lined up paint the picture of your smoking life. Your mind is filled with these frames and then an advertising programme comes along with different frames. Such as images of dying or sick people, these are supposed to replace all the other frames in your mind.

But the existing frames are so entrenched that for most people the grisly images simply create increased fear while they continue to smoke. You may try to force these scary frames to help you to quit but these thoughts only go as deep as the conscious mind will permit.

But the long established smoking frames have been lodged in your unconscious mind since the time you began to smoke.

In hypnosis we use a term called re-framing.  It’s a way to have someone see something from a different perspective. When my son was young one of his friends would stay over, but he only ate pasta cheese and rock melon. He thought everything was yucky.

One night we had a butter chicken curry. My son started eating as it was his favorite, I told his friend he would have to have pasta and cheese because the chicken was so good that we wouldn’t want to share it.

After a while of listening to lots of satisfied eating sounds he said he was glad that he didn’t have to eat such foods, I agreed and suggested that he probably couldn’t curry anyway. He rose to the challenge and in what seemed no time at all he had demolished an entire plate and wanted more.

He continued to try new foods on his visits and soon surprised his family with his new found love of food. He re-framed his view of food.

To change your frame what is required is an intense focus state, which we know as a trance or hypnosis.

This way a conversation is had with your unconscious mind, during which you will easily create new frames in your mind. New ways of thinking as a non smoker, thinking feeling and behaving as a person who always chooses to breathe fresh air, as a person who cares for themselves and those close to them.

Quitting Smoking And Surgery

July 2, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

In many cases quitting smoking isn’t an option for even the most important surgical procedures, such as heart surgery. That’s because as a smoker you will be on the bottom of the list. You are perceived not only as a surgical risk but as a low priority.

Surgery is a stressful event for your body, even a young healthy body, the anaesthetic, the cutting, the immune challenges, the emotional pressure, the physical strain of having joints and organs pushed and pulled, and the stitches.

Some of the problems include:

Reduction of oxygen to all tissues of your body. This is a significant problem, your heart has to work harder, your blood pressure is higher and you can have as much as ten times as much carbon monoxide in your blood as a non smoker, this can affect your heart during surgery.

Reduced healing capacity. Of course you want to heal quickly, and get out of hospital. But as a smoker you are at a greater risk of infection, bad scaring, and a longer recovery time, this means that your return to work and normal function will be delayed. Having a compromised immune system from smoking is no way to enter a hospital, let alone surgery.

Less ability to cope with anaesthesia. Many people feel the ill effects and the stress of anaesthetics, you will feel it worse as a smoker. You may need more drugs to keep you under and feel pain more acutely.

Blood clots. Cigarettes make your blood thicker and sticker so the risk of clotting and stroke are increased.

Obviously quitting before surgery is the best thing to do. Of course the longer the better. Eight weeks gives you the best results, in four weeks your lungs will be working better, and therefore moving more oxygen.

Even quitting 12 hours before surgery will have some benefit for your heart and blood pressure.

The question is, if you are having surgery and you have to quit anyway, why wouldn’t you stop at least two months prior to your surgery.

The next step is to use this new found freedom from smoking and let it keep you a non smoker for life. 70% of smokers who have heart surgery return to smoking, don’t be one of them.

You can quit smoking and feel more calm and relaxed about your surgery by using hypnosis to quit. This effective process will smooth the way for you to be not only a low smoker but recover better and quicker from surgery.

Quitting Smoking With Hercule Poirot

June 30, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

Hercule Poirot the famous Agatha Christie detective was himself a smoker. But he was most well known as a master of  solving puzzles. While you may think that quitting smoking is a simple matter of taking some mind bending pharmaceutical or patches which contain nicotine an effective weed killer. As many before you have discovered there is so much more to stopping this deadly habit.

So you need to find a better way to quit and you need a sleuth on your side to dig deep to solve your smoking puzzle and set you free.

Most people when asked why they want to quit, reply that it is for their health. If you are thinking the same then what does this vague statement mean exactly?

What are your problems now, are you coughing in the morning, do you wheeze or puff climbing stairs?

Do your lungs feel congested? Do you struggle to keep up with your children grandchildren or friends?

Do you feel the pain of exclusion as you smoke outside on a cold night as your child stares at you through the glass, how many opportunities have you let slip, precious moments that are gone forever.

Are there places and times you smoke that are special to you, perhaps only known to you?

Do you stand in city laneways at lunchtime with strangers bonding over the need to hide away to comply with the ever encroaching rules?

Do you change clothes and wash your hair so that some people don’t know you smoke? Or perhaps you keep the secret from co workers or your doctor, but you realise that non smokers are sensitive to the smell and doctors pick up on the physical signs.

There are so many things that you have in common with most smokers but there are those important distinctions which apply only to you.

Through taking the time to do the detective work you can get to the core of your smoking problem. To make this information truly valuable these clues are used in your hypnosis session. This way you quickly and easily get to the heart of the problem and you get to be a non smoker faster than you ever dreamed possible.

This process takes nothing more than your complete honesty in gathering the information, your strong desire to quit and your commitment to the hypnosis process. Once you have these things lined up the rest is straight forward.

Quitting Smoking…13 Signs You Are Not Take It Seriously

June 22, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi future Smoker

Not taking quitting smoking seriously may sound like an odd way to approach such an important issue. But that’s exactly what I’m suggesting happens sometimes. Maybe it’s intentional and maybe not. By that I mean are you consciously or unconsciously blocking your success.

Some signs you are unconsciously blocking your success, or you just don’t want to quit.

  1. You turn up for a hypnosis session and challenge the therapist to put you under.
  2. You have been too busy to read you pre session email and follow the pre instructions.
  3. Your partner booked the session and you engaged with the process.
  4. Your intake form is only sparsely filled out, avoiding specific important details.
  5. You keep some cigarettes on hand just in case.
  6. You’re not prepared to avoid a risky smoking situation on the night of your session, in order for your nervous system to fully process the change.
  7. You complain that you may have to give up two hours of your time to quit.
  8. When booking the session it is the least important item in your busy schedule.
  9. You don’t do your follow up steps.
  10. You take several weeks to report a problem.
  11. You come out of hypnosis, and in spite of experiencing specific hypnotic indicators, in spite of no prior hypnotic experience, you immediately question whether you were in a trance.
  12. You have a cigarette sometime after quitting, even though you didn’t need one or want one.
  13. You forget to turn up for your appointment, given that most people who attend can think of little else in the prior day, forgetting is questionable.

So why turn at all if you are not serious, it could be that you don’t want to quit, but are going through the motions to please someone else. But more likely you have a parts conflict.

That is a part of you wants to quick, but another part deep down in your subconscious is not only not ready but will actively block your efforts.

Let’s assume that you do want to be a non smoker, then the solution is to dig deep prior to your session, to be completely honest about your reasons for smoking, and to allow yourself to deeply feel the pain of smoking.

Look at yourself in the mirror and shot out your intention to quit, then light a cigarette and blow the smoke through a tissue and feel the disgust.

Quitting Smoking…Does Hypnosis Scepticism Help You?

June 15, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

Most people who choose hypnosis to quit smoking have never experienced it before. And so some approach the session with some degree of scepticism. This is natural response for people who are anxious about making an important change in their life.

But once you have decided to make your appointment this feeling is a waste of emotional energy. You want to be free from smoking and you need to be committed and focused on stopping cigarettes for good.

Quitting is a two person job, you and the hypnotist. You each have a role to play, their role is to bring all of their skill and experience to the process, and yours is to fully participate, want to succeed, and expect to succeed.

After all you are not having a session to feel a little better about yourself, you are there to stop a habit which is slowly killing you, whether you like to acknowledge it or not.

A habit which steals thousands of dollars from your bank account each year and robs you of precious time with family and friends.

So any feelings of doubt or scepticism can just fade into the distance when comparing them with the benefits for of quitting.

The easiest way to change your thoughts about hypnosis is to focus on what you want, all your powerful reasons for quitting. The benefits, the savings, the improved health. Being able to be more active as you breathe easier and have more energy.

By doing this you are already starting the quitting process before you come in for your session. Turning up to quit with an arms folded posture, challenging the hypnotherapist to fix you. You are wasting your time, their time and more importantly your future well being.

Remember this is all about you. No matter how caring the practitioner is, you are just another smoker in the overall scheme of things. If you don’t succeed, your practitioner will still go home to their family and have dinner and watch television.

They may be concerned on your behalf, but the reality of therapy is that your practitioner cannot agonize over each client or they will go mad. If however your failure to prepare and engage with the process fully results in a failure, then it’s you who lives with the consequences.

Perhaps you will claim that hypnosis doesn’t work, which then cuts you off from your best quitting hope and further cements your belief that you can’t quit. All you have to do is prepare, expect and want to quit and fully engage and you will succeed.

Quitting Smoking…Why Are There Government Cigarette Quotas.

June 11, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

Yesterday as I was buying some groceries I read a notice on the big blank white doors which house the cigarettes in the shop. It apologised for perhaps not having the brands that the customer may want because of government quota restrictions in place.

It’s the first time I have ever seen such a notice, I usually watch with interest as the sales assistant opens the big white doors to reveal lots of packets which all look the same to me, but to them and the smoker being served they have learnt to easily identify the desired brand in spite of the plain green packaging.

There are proposals in Australia to dramatically increase the cost of licences to sellers and to limit the number of cigarettes a person can buy at any one time.

It would take a significant monitoring system to control and record all these sales, and this reminds me of prohibition. We all know what happened during prohibition, alcohol was manufactured and sold underground.

The net result was a loss of tax income to the American government and a huge costly effort to police these rules.

Cigarette tax has risen hugely in the past few years and will continue to rise each year with the goal of making cigarettes very expensive, causing people to spontaneously quit. To quote the classic movie the castle “their dreaming”

The point of all these actions is obviously to help people give up their smoking habit. But these actions are not proven to be successful. Governments claim that plain packaging has reduced smoking, cigarette companies claim that the efforts have failed.

What I do know is that from surveying over 200 clients since the introduction of plain packaging the overall response from my clients is that the whole process has been a big joke and did not contribute to their decision to quit smoking.

Quotas just mean that a smoker is more likely to buy their smokes from a different retail outlet. To ensure they get the brand they want, they will stop at two or three places to get the amount they want.

Increasing the price of cigarettes dramatically impacts only on those who can least afford to pay. Of course no one can afford to smoke from a health perspective, but the reality is many will continue to do so, until they reach a point in their lives when they choose to quit.

That is always the right and only time that change will occur.

Quitting Smoking…Good NewsYou Won’t Have To Give Up Sex

June 4, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

There are many triggers for smoking. In the same week a client thought that smoking after sex was an urban myth, another couple reported that when then tried quitting smoking they gave up sex for fear of setting off a trigger.

There’s a first time for everything, but while few people may stop having sex because of fear of starting smoking again, there are many people who are afraid to do many of their regular things for the same fear.

Some give up coffee, or avoid parties or drinking with their friends. You can’t just shut yourself away and avoid the world. You are going to have to face the trigger situations sooner or later so while it may be sensible to give yourself a day to allow the changes to integrate into your nervous system it is important to get on with normal life, as soon as possible.

The reason that many smokers are concerned is that they perceive the act of quitting from a smokers point of view. This is a natural perspective, for they can’t yet imagine the view from the non smokers side.

You are so connected to all your so called triggers that you see the problem back to front. You think that when the phone rings you are triggered to smoke. But the fact is that you have conditioned yourself to smoke when the phone rings, or you have coffee or sex etc.

The fact is that most of the people you know do just fine in any of these situations and never consider a smoke, you too can be the same way and all you have to do is to access the power of hypnosis.

Hypnosis goes to the heart of the problem and separates you from your triggers; it sets you free from feeling like a cigarette when you have a coffee etc.

It does this by helping you create a new scenery in your mind. Instead of seeing the world through the filter of a smoker you remove the filters and see the world as a non smoker. You live in a world where you don’t have to suck in fumes of toxic smoke into your lungs to cope with your day.

You quickly discover that smoking didn’t improve your life in any way shape or form. You now realise that it only detracted from you having a good quality of life.

Quitting Smoking…Pigs Might Fly

Hi Future Non Smokers

If you’re not familiar with the saying “Pigs might fly” it refers to something being very unlikely to occur. I wonder how many people who have tried quitting smoking have had the exact same thought.

It can come up in several different conversations.

You should quit smoking, sure and pigs might fly.

There is a fast effective way to quit for life, without stress and cravings, sure pigs might fly.

You can do this in just 90 minutes, more flying pigs.

You can succeed when others you know have struggled, oink oink

If government plain packaging and scary advertisements stop smoking, if drug companies with drugs which have a list of side effects a mile long, including heart attacks and psychosis will stop smoking or even having close relatives dying from smoking related illnesses, then pigs might fly.

This may sound harsh and too black and white. But I hear the stories I hear what over a 1000 smokers have told me about their reasons and motivations.

Quitting smoking is all about a personal decision to stop. Friends, families, doctors and governments may offer some influence, but it’s only when the right moment comes that a true effort is made to quit cigarettes.

You know that some past efforts haven’t gone well, there was a part of you that wanted to quit but another part wanted to keep going.

But don’t think you have to wait until you are 100% ready, because realistically that time may never come. There will always be some nervousness, some fear of how you will handle stress, or boredom, perhaps you even like smoking.

Many people do like to smoke, it’s true, so what, there are lots of deadly behaviours which humans indulge in, some take cocaine, or binge drink, or drive recklessly, or any number of life threatening actions.

The bottom line is that it is your choice, if you want to smoke then smoke, but if you want to quit then simply acknowledge that killing yourself slowly with cigarettes is of an importance many many times greater than any possible pleasure you could gain from sucking on a burning toxic stick of deadly chemicals.

My being gentle with you won’t save you from lung cancer or emphysema, or heart disease, quitting can be tough and you need tough support, so that you can be free to live your life for years to come pursuing the dreams you planned for so long.

Quit Smoking Hypnosis…Will You Be Clucking Like A chicken?

May 21, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

The most common question I am asked by clients when they come in for their quit smoking session is “Will you make me cluck like a chicken?

My answer is always, do you want to cluck like a chicken? We have a laugh and then I describe how stage hypnosis is a performance, and that the people who come on stage are carefully selected and most importantly they are willing to play.

They are the real performers they want to be hypnotised, they are eager to be the centre of attention and so having them do fun things is easy.

The most important thing to remember is that it is not possible to make these people do anything they they ethically or morally wouldn’t agree to.

So you come in for your quit smoking session. You are a little anxious, but this is completely natural, after all you are making a big change in your life and at this stage you are not sure how it will work.

You then learn that you have given your permission to only quit smoking, not to hand over your wallet or cluck like a chicken, so you begin to relax.

You feel comfortable when you discover that there is no such thing as mind control. Just imagine that if it were possible hypnotists everywhere would be living on private islands with their subjects doing their bidding all over the world.

As I say to clients, I could easily hypnotise my son to easily pass his driver’s test, but not to automatically empty the dish washer. Simply because he didn’t want to.

It has to be in your interest to change, you need to be committed to quitting smoking which goes much deeper than clucking like a chicken.

The public’s experience of hypnosis is tainted by television where anything can happen and stage which is more performance than skill. Clinical hypnosis is a safe effective way to gently change the habits which are limiting your life.

Stopping cigarettes is the one absolutely guaranteed way to dramatically improve and perhaps save your life. There is no debate; the jury was in decades ago.

Your hesitation is natural, you have tried and failed before, you like it, it is your friend or support when stressed, but just remember that you don’t have to wait until you feel completely ready, that may never happen.

Just make the life changing decision now and take action.

Quit smoking…When does the Quit Process Begin

May 20, 2014 by
Filed under how to quit smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

At a guess I assume you think that the quit process starts the moment you consciously stop cigarettes.

But from a hypnosis perspective, it starts much earlier than you last cigarette. If done properly the process begins with a website or brochure. It should draw you in and start to create mental images that begin to prime you to think and feel a certain way.

Because you have become immune to scary quit smoking images, it’s most likely the positive images and words which will have the best effect.

The next step is the phone call you make to a hypnotist, this should continue the journey to quitting, even though you may feel nervous about quitting, your determination increases.

When you come in for your session your practitioner should create a friendly atmosphere which increases your confidence and determination. Even the simple act of paying prior to your session or at least right at the start is another important cog in the process.

Of course the session is geared 100% towards quitting for life.

Afterwards it’s important that you continue to re-enforce the new position of being a non smoker. Mentally feel sorry for smokers and with every one you see, congratulate yourself that you are a non smoker.

This process needs to continue for at least a year, in order that should a crisis occur in your life that you don’t default to your old patterns of behaviour.

This article may seem like a marketing process for the hypnotherapist, and in a sense it is. Marketers would call this market to match. But the exact process the therapist uses to bring in a new client and take them through the process has the duel purpose of ensuring the step by step kicks in right from the start.

It’s like being on a Childs slippery slide. It starts off slow then gains momentum then evening out to safely deliver the user to the ground, or in this case into the world of non smokers.

That is those people who don’t inhale combusted toxins into their lungs and brains and livers etc. Or literally burn thousands of dollars every year, or smell like an ashtray.

As you can see the process is more involved and more important than just turning up for an appointment there are several phases, but don’t forget the most important, that is your total commitment.

Quitting Smoking…Do Non smokers Create Quit Ads?

May 16, 2014 by

smoking

Hi Future Non Smoker

Quit smoking advertisements whether they be, on television or on cigarette packets, tend to focus on shock value and motivating smokers through fear. I’m guessing but I highly suspect that the quit ads are created by non smokers.

A non smoker will think that these grisly images will obviously scare anybody into quitting cigarettes for good. But having worked with over a thousand smokers I am convinced that they have little effect.

I asked every client about the current television ads or images on packets and their answer is always the same. They don’t see it. They just filter it out, or even worse it causes them to want a cigarette.

To quote several clients, when asked what they are thinking when their child sees the scary ads and asks them again to quit. Their answer is uniformly “I want a smoke right now”

The plain green packaging in Australia, seeks to de-brand cigarettes, it certainly makes it harder for shop keepers, but my clients consider it a joke.

International marketing studies have shown that smokers, when shown grisly images such as on packets while in a functional MRI, the smokers craving centres in their brain fire up.

70% of smokers immediately want a cigarette when they see a no smoking sign.

So why do these images get the thumbs up in focus groups?

There are two reasons.

  1. In focus groups there tends to be herd thinking.
  2. People give logical not emotional answers in focus groups. This very much skews the results.

In the study mentioned above the same groups which agreed that the images would stop them smoking were emotionally stimulated in the MRI by the same images.

I would tend to believe a multi million dollar marketing study any day over some government department which thinks it knows best.

True motivation comes in three forms.

  1. Right timing, it has to be the right time for the smoker, not their partner, family, friends or doctor.
  2. Right reasons, there is usually some critical level of dissatisfaction reached where the pain of quitting over powers the pleasure or perceived benefits of smoking.
  3. A decisive moment, such as the diagnosis of a smoking related disorder, or a friend or loved one dying from a smoker related cancer.

Quitting Smoking…Can Affirmations Help

Hi Future Non Smoker

The self help movements of the past few decades have placed great sore in the value of positive affirmations. The question is can positive thinking help you to quit smoking.

Probably the most useful statement I have heard on the subject is attributed to Anthony Robbins. He stated that affirmations without action, is just self delusion. Certainly just saying something is so, doesn’t make it so. But combining it with positive supporting action can increase the likely hood of a successful outcome.

Affirmations can help in the short term by directing your thoughts in a positive direction, but it is a band aid at best.

Affirmations ultimately work because the message filters slowly into your subconscious and may eventually become the default thought or feeling.

I discovered that there is another elements to successfully affirmations for quitting smoking, or any thing else. The method is simple; close your eyes in a quiet space, say the affirmation then notice any response in your thoughts feelings or body.

e.g you state that you are a non smoker, you get a comfortable feeling in your body and a feeling that this is right for you. This means that your conscious and unconscious mind, are in agreement and so this affirmation will work for you.

In another example you state that “I am successfully quitting smoking”, you notice a feeling of doubt or a slumping feeling in your body. This indicates you have some unconscious resistance.

In this case which will be common for areas of your life which you want to change, but have struggled, there is more work to do.

I recommend affirmations as a way of focussing on the change you desire, prior to a quit cigarettes hypnosis session. And after to continue to re-enforce your change, but now it will be without any unconscious resistance.

Quit Smoking…Why Does Nicotine Replacement Therapy Work In Trials But Fail In The Real World.

Hi Future Non Smoker

Nicotine replacement therapy comes in the form of gum, lozenges, tablets, patches and sprays. The advertisements tell you it works, your doctor may tell it works and government sponsored programs tell you it works, but there is a different story in the real world.

The claimed success rate is anywhere from 17% to 50% in randomised trials. But university studies have shown close to zero effect in the real world and British government figures state a 2% success rate in the real world.

So why is there a difference? The real world experience shows the true value, but the studies introduce a different element. That of direction, support and an element of trying to please.

In trials there is an element of priming or light hypnosis used to condition the participants into believing they will succeed. They are supported in their efforts and have to report in to continue to stay in the study.

Another factor is that the nicotine replacement in any form in a study is free. Studies also measure outcomes over a short period of time. The benefits appear to be related to the placebo effect

In the real world nicotine replacement doesn’t work simply because it isn’t the problem. In the Duke University study under ideal conditions, only a 22% percent success rate was recorded. How can this possibly be if nicotine is the problem?

Many of my 1000 plus clients have reported smoking while using patches. This doesn’t seem to make sense, until you realise that it’s not about nicotine. It’s all about a very powerful set of associations.

Firstly watching older family and other adults using cigarettes to relax and socialise and to release stress and also in a whole series of situations.

Next, when you start because of the peer pressure you enjoy the acceptance; this starts the process of deeply believing in the so called benefits.

Over the years you were further conditioned by the advertising which showed how cool or sophisticated or rugged you could be if you just smoke the right brand.

Then you wanted to quit, but there were so many stories of how hard it was, because most people were using the wrong way, and also many people who pretended to quit, but failed because they wanted to smoke.

Plus the gloomy government advertisements showing stressed people, encouraging them that their next attempt might be successful. Or the pharmaceutical company lying to smokers in their advertisements claiming it may take them six or seven attempts to quit.

It’s no wonder that smokers believe it’s so hard, they have been literally hypnotised to smoke and to believe that they will struggle to quit.

The habit can be broken, so many have done it using the most successful way to quit according to New Scientist Magazine; Hypnosis. Just put all your fears and failures behind you and book your session.
