Quitting Smoking…How To Give yourself The Perfect Detox

Occasionally I see clients who are very healthy in all respects other than smoking. It’s the last thing they need to change. Many of them liked to do an occasional detox, but the futility of the process often escapes them.

Even if you have not the slightest interest in healthy practices you can give yourself the best detox in the world by quitting smoking. A traditional detox done properly takes on average six weeks. Within six of quitting your body will undergo an important detox process.

The term detox is often thrown around but many haven’t a clue as to what it actually does. I despair seeing the latest trend in three day or seven day detoxes most of which are just some crazy story in a magazine or a promotion by a health food shop.

Don’t worry you don’t have to get technical quitting will automatically start the process, but their a few things you can do to facilitate the process. If you have been smoking for years it’s not just your lungs that are congested.

Every cell in your body has been affected by cigarettes. Your liver and kidneys, the major organs of waste processing, in particular have borne the brunt of years of toxic exposure.

To support a faster return to better health you can help the process along. Drink extra water, a lot more if you don’t currently drink much. Six glasses for a couple of weeks will help. This helps your kidneys and ensures your cells are properly hydrated.

That 1000mg of vitamin C per day and two cups of green tea will help the first phase of liver detoxification.

This may sound obvious but when I asked clients this question they don’t always know. For some it’s their scheduled break, they smoke because it’s the only chance they will get. Even if they don’t have any signal that they need to.

Others say they smoke before going to a movie, just in case. Many say they will smoke between courses when eating out, or before arriving at an airport. When pressed most don’t even know why they do it.

It’s common for smokers to light up at certain times and places, or with other actions such as having a coffee, a beer or a glass of wine. Some will smoke because others light up.

Most of these same people will admit that if something changes and they can’t smoke for some reason that they manage just fine, they don’t die or experience unbearable pain they either don’t notice or experience some discomfort.

Some people can however identify a feeling or a location. When asked they might say they get a gnawing feeing in their stomach or chest. Or an uneasy feeling that they can’t quit explain. Now we are getting somewhere.

All the other times and places are just habits, smoking for no other reason than because you can. It’s those times when you have those feelings which are of interest in a therapeutic situation.

But most people when questioned say they don’t know how it feels. They have never noticed or stopped to think about it. Guess what that is great news. It is important for me as a hypnotist and important for you as a person who wants to quit smoking.

Because it means all you have is a habit, not an addiction, not some problem which can’t be solved that you will take to your grave, just a habit, so quitting for you with hypnosis is a fairly straight forward event proving you are ready and committed.

As for those who feel a physical sensation you are in a small group of about 5% at most. Hypnosis is still critical for you but you may need some nicotine replacement as a support. But the good news is that you can still quit, it will just take a little more effort.

Imagine you didn’t take out the garbage in your home; your kitchen would be a mess in a week.

And what if the garbage services didn’t remove the rubbish from your city, it would be stinking chaos.

Your body is like a city where only some of the rubbish is only collected, with lots left behind outside your home on the footpath.

You can feel the garbage when you cough in the mornings or when your colds last longer than they should.

Or when you climb the stairs and feel your lungs working harder than they should for your age, and of course when your lungs struggle your heart is in the same boat.

The garbage floats around your arteries visiting every corner of your body on its journey, leaving a little behind. Like some yob driving around throwing their takeaway leftovers out of the window of their car.

In the legs it causes vascular problems leading to amputation, in the lungs its cancer, but don’t forget about your brain.

I’m sitting at my desk searching for inspiration for my 260 something such article. My eye falls to a jar by my computer. It contains cigarettes butts floating in water. Not the sort of thing you typically expect to find in an office.

You may wonder how a jar with butts helps people quit smoking.

I use a strategy for clients who need a top up for any reason. I take them into hypnosis and have them think about smoking,  then I remove the lid and pass it under their nose. Everybody pulls their head back a little.

Nobody likes the smell, it stinks, and some feel a little nauseous so I remind them that no matter how bad they feel they won’t vomit.

The room quickly fills with this stench so I replace the lid quickly. I then have them imagine the nicotine from a packet of cigarettes, squeezed out, about five drops onto a spoon. Again the jar under their nose.

You pour the nicotine onto your skin, you feel the burn, you smell the burning skin and hair. Again the jar.

You feel the pain as it burns into your lungs and arteries, and seeps into every cell in your body. The jar is passed under your nose again.

You are again asked to think about smoking, here comes the jar, you are reminded of the burning lung tissue, the smell the pain.

This method is very effective for some people. Unpleasant for all, including myself, the imagery is graphic, but not unrealistic. The smell is pungent but not unlike what people around you smell and only a slightly stronger version of what your hair and clothes smell like!

Imagine if you could flip your lungs out after an evening of smoking and drinking, the stink and the colour it would sicken you. Just consider how hard your body is working every to manage this assault.

In hypnosis this desensitisation process can work very quickly. It is not done usually in the first session because there are more important things to address. Especially the triggers and unconscious connections.

These are some of the sneaky back door aspects of smoking and have absolutely nothing to do with smoking. Quitting smoking…It’s Going To Be So Good But…

It’s going to be so good to finally quit but! I’ve heard these words so many times. The excitement which tapers to fear and a feeling of failure even before the attempt is made is also very common.

Effective motivation requires a personal and compelling vision either away from something unpleasant, or toward a specific desirable goal. Charles Andreas & Charles Faulkner.

This quote sums up your journey to breathing fresh air. You can get caught up in the fear and failure of past attempts or you can start the process of pushing away from your past.

This is done by in many ways. You could start by breathing out through a tissue next time you smoke. Notice the disgusting dirty yellow stain and take a moment to contemplate the implications.

It will be now a lot easier to take the next step or bad mouthing each and every smoke you have. Talk to it look at it with disgust and tell it, that it is nearly over that you don’t need it anymore and its hold over you is now gone.

You may feel a bit silly doing this but it will start the process of sending negative smoking feelings into your unconscious mind.

Quitting Smoking…Nicotine A Murder Weapon?

In a recent episode of Hawaii Five-O difficult to trace poison used as a murder weapon was liquid Nicotine. Well known as a powerful insecticide, in this case it was introduced into the victim’s water bottle.

That is television but it is known that the amount of nicotine in an average cigar if injected will result in immediate death. Again bad news but unlikely to occur outside of a murder mystery.

But it’s not hard to draw the obvious conclusion that smoking is just a slow way to be poisoned, it’s starting to sound like another crime plot!

Except this plot has some strange twists. A poison in disguise as a social pleasurable drug was made acceptable, fashionable, cool, a symbol of toughness or sophistication.

The world embraced it, it was supported by doctors, made even more popular by Hollywood, it was in many ways the perfect product. It sold itself, it was just a question of which brand to choose.

The slow poisoning of generations had begun. As early as 1908 it was determined that smoking was harmful to health, yet the all-powerful cigarette juggernaut kept pushing the good for you line.

Well paid PHD’s and medical doctors whose pockets were lined with cash would front the media and lie through their teeth.

In the early seventies researchers declared that smoking caused cancer. The American government suppressed this data until eight years later they could no longer ignore the facts.

So now the truth began to immerge yet the slow poisoning continued, and it continues until today. The difference is everyone in the western world is aware of the continued poisoning on yet another generation.

Of course as a smoker you don’t think of it in those terms, you’re aware of all the health problems but the truth is re-framed in a more acceptable way. No government has the courage to come and and point a finger at big tobacco and state that they are poisoning their population.

Why? Because they would have to admit to being complicit in this slow poisoning. But of course they their interest is divided into promoting quit smoking and collecting huge taxes.

The good news about this particular poison is that when you quit you will start to recover quickly and within a year or so you will mostly be free from the effects of the nicotine poison.

So when you are ready to quit and you need the perfect antidote, hypnosis is the best answer, and just like the best crime stores the victim will recover just in time!

Quitting Smoking…Your First Three Weeks As A Non Smoker

The first three weeks of making an important change in your life is the most critical time. Your experience will determine in those critical days will determine your outcome.

Most people when they quit smoking struggle and suffer, during those first three weeks and this often results in failure. The flow on effect is a strengthened belief that quitting is difficult, and painful, so that when you make another attempt you are unconsciously set up to fail. And unfortunately fail is what most people will do.

This is why so many government quit ads encourage people to keep on trying, all the while causing further frustration.

This three week period is the time when your unconscious mind fights back. It thinks it is protecting you from this scary change which is occurring. You have a long history of smoking thoughts and feelings locked away.

Memories of thousands of cigarettes connected to fun times, family events, happy times and sad times all shared with a stick of tobacco lodged firmly between your lips. All locked away in your unconscious mind, keeping alive the belief that smoking feels good, even if it doesn’t.

At least that’s how it was before society forced you outside in the cold and the rain, or down lane ways in cities, shunned by polite society, and endlessly nagged by the health police.  

The reason hypnosis is so successful is that, because it separates you from the triggers and habit side, it makes the initial transition period so much easier. But also because there is a built in follow up system which makes the whole process work so much smoother.

Quitting Smoking…A Long History Of Denial

It was way back in 1900 that researchers determined that cigarettes caused cancer in guinea pigs. That same year four American states banned the sale of cigarettes. That same year the US Supreme Court upheld the decision of the states to ban the sale of smokes and 43 or the then 45 states had strong anti-smoking action.

That same year 4.4 billion cigarettes were sold in the US by the fifties 306 billion smokes were consumed.

Just imagine if this action had held up there wouldn’t be a smoker anywhere in the western world. You would never have started, you would never have wasted all that money and you would never have put your life at risk.

So what happened? How did all of this action result in an industry growing for many decades to come, and for being responsible for the deaths of millions of people?

The history is full of ducking and weaving by the cigarette companies, fighting battles in court with huge resources being topped up every day from sales, lobbying to and corrupting at the highest level of government.

Plus shifting the technical details, such as the miracle filter supported by celebrities, plus low tar and low nicotine products. All the while the image of smoking being glamorous being promoted in Hollywood movies.

Sophisticated, rugged, and cool these where the images of the smoker. Each product positioned itself to appeal to different market segments. Action sports all were heavily sponsored with players lighting up after the event for the benefit of the cameras.

Not to mention the billions of dollars collected by governments, rubbing their hands together with glee, while sternly sending out their anti-smoking messages.

All of this image making lodged firmly into the unconscious of generations of smokers. Even to this day most smokers can easily recall the marketing messages and the jingles.

These days there is such a powerful anti-smoking message that it throws up a wall of resistance for many smokers. They are sick of being hassled, discriminated against and nagged endlessly. They are legal after all, and the government takes a hefty percentage of the retail cost in taxes.

It’s no wonder that smokers fall into a group which are hard to understand. From my position it doesn’t matter why a person smokes, because what I do is help them to quit with hypnosis when they have reached the point where smoking is no longer acceptable to them.
