The Author, Medical Doctor and expert in mindfullness meditation Jon Kabat-Zinn published a book on this same meditation living called Full Catastrophe Living.

This book belongs to my wife and for years I have seen it on the book shelves and I always thought it was a strange title.

It is actually a guide for living a good life but the title made me think of the opposite. But the negative side does remind me of the life a smoker is setting themselves up for.

Humans beings have always found ways to create their own catastrophes and smokers just join a long list of people throughout time who have found various ways to destroy their own lives.

You may not agree with such a strong word, I could have used the term health train wreck and that would have been just as accurate.

I have to say that if disagree then you are still under the illusion that smoker isn’t as harmful as it has been promoted our that maybe you think you will miraculously be spared from the pain of a smoking related disorder.

But assuming that because you are reading this it means you are concerned so let’s just call smoking for what it is, a full blown health catastrophe. A ticking time bomb just waiting to go off inside your body.

I want you to think like this so that you can make yourself angry and make a 100% commitment to quit cigarettes as soon as possible.

The good news is that you can avert the looming disaster. In our lives we have seen many significant catastrophes, usually delivered straight to our televisions. At the time it seems that it won’t ever be possible to recover and rebuilt broken human lives and buildings.

Yet in time life returns to normal, cities are rebuilt or beaches are cleaned and eventually it is almost forgotten.

 

You could think of your body as an Exon Valdez oil spill disaster, but one that happened slowly instead of in one regretful incident.

The process is in several stages.

  • Firstly you have to recognise the extent of the problem.
  • Next you have to create the will to do something about it.

  • After that the first phase of the clean-up is completed. You have stemmed the flow of pollution. Now for the recovery phase.

You can talk about quitting, you can moan about how hard it is, you can think that there is no solution for you, but the only way you will get out of that smoking hole is to stop digging and quit now.

The hole is getting deeper with every cigarette, but also with every excuse you find for not giving up.

  • I’m not ready.
  • I’m too busy to quit.
  • Life is too stressful to quit now.
  • I can’t live without cigarettes.
  • I tried before and I failed.

These are just a few of the common excuses, and I bet you have a few of your own. There may be some truth to these excuses but these very excuses are digging you a deeper hole. Plus if you are waiting for a perfect time you will be waiting and digging for a long time.

The problem is that the deeper you dig the closer you get to not a pot of gold, but to a dark doorway, that once you enter will cause you a world of pain and regret and stress and anger.

You may think that quitting hard, but just imagine for a moment being given the diagnosis of lung cancer. You will be so deep in that hole that even the sun will disappear, and as the reality of your situation kicks in you will realise that the fight that you have on your hands is a hundred times worse than quitting smoking ever was.

Human beings are motivated by moving towards pleasure and pushing away from pain.

While we may think we are pleasure focussed it is the push from pain which is our strongest driver. Most smokers would agree that the pleasure of sucking hot smoke into their lungs has diminished over time.

Most of my clients readily admit to disliking smoking , yet they continue. They keep doing it to push away from the pain of nicotine withdrawal, and facing the reality of having to manage their lives without cigarettes.

The pushing away pain is two separate things:

  1. The real pain of withdrawal.

 Yes there is a real pain, or more correctly a real discomfort. That’s the fact. The belief about the strength of this pain is a story passed from smoker to smoker. Mostly perpetrated by people who didn’t want to quit anyway or those whose fear rose with the discomfort and then gave up their quest to quit.

You may doubt this but I have three ways to support this .

  • It’s about the 7% of people quit cigarettes by going cold turkey. How could they do this if the pain was as strong as you believe.
  • Nicotine replacement has been proven to be nothing more than a placebo in multiple university studies, so the strong pain of withdrawal is wiped away for some with a patch or a spray, but because it has no effect, again it is only a small percentage who benefit.
  • Hypnosis is known to be the most successful way to quit smoking. But how could this happen if nicotine truly was a powerful addictive drug. I’m sure you are beginning to see that it isn’t.
  1. The imagined pain of withdrawal. This is where the real power lies. All of the stories you have heard, all the lies from the cigarette companies and the pharmaceutical companies wanting you to buy their in effective products over and over because you placed blind faith in their marketing promises.

Not just you, the medical profession bought into this as well, because they just wanted a medical solution, to an emotional problem.

Your subconscious is full of the stories of others and your failed attempts to quit, but this is the exact territory where hypnosis comes into its own. The ability to introduce new powerful beliefs, which will support you in your efforts to be free from cigarettes.

For so long smoking was seen as a part of living a life made popular, by stars on the big screen. It seemed that we could experience small chunk of their wonderful life if we just did what they did.

Well history shows some interesting things.

  1. Movie stars are not superheros; they have suffered and died from smoking just like any other smoker.
  2. Smoking has never added to anyone’s life, it just slowly strips away this same life leaving an empty of regret and anger and sorrow.

Smoking in many is a way to dis-engage from a healthy and happy life. You may never have thought of it in this way but consider this.

  • Smoking causes others to judge you, which could limit your advancement in your career, or you can be labelled as not intelligent. If you doubt this then ask some non-smokers what they think
  • Smoking is expensive, the average smoker in Australia spends $6000 a year on cigarettes.
  • Smoking robs you of your fitness, making some of your past sporting interests impossible for you, or at least you can’t perform to your potential.
  • Smoking damages your health, limiting your life and your choices, taking you away from a normal life as you age.
  • Smoking makes you less attractive to the bulk of adults reducing your potential for relationships, unless its with another smoker, who you can share moments with, like coughing and cancer.

But you can wipe away all of these elements of dis-engagement and reclaim your life. In as short a time as 90 minutes, you can step into a new world. One with better health, less expense, and importantly better relationships in all aspects of your life.

The outside world may not put on a ticker tape parade for you, but inside you will be set fre to re-engage with the world. You can have your lunch anywhere, not skulking in an alley away from judging eyes.

Back in the seventies there was a book written by Bernard Jenson called tissue cleansing through bowel management. This book has remained something of a bible in certain health circles ever since.

The premise was that using colonic irrigation you could cleanse your body and become healthier. Fortunately you don’t have to involve yourself with any kind of irrigation, unless you want to, and of course that would be a waste of time because as a smoker  as you are just topping up your toxic load again.

Just stopping smoking with hypnosis immediately starts this tissue cleaning process, automatically even if you have no real health interests, other than not dying of a smoking related cancer.

If you take a moment to consider what is going on inside your body. When you breathe in all that smoke, you know full well that with every cigarette some it is being left behind in your body.

It’s the stuff of fairy tales where the evil witch casts a spell on the beautiful princess or handsome prince and they are turned into a frog. Doomed to hop around and croak until the perfect person comes along and with one kiss they are instantly transformed back to their former selves.

I’m not suggesting anyone reading this looks like a frog but there are some similarities in your life to the old fairy tales.

The evil witch is the cigarette companies and the marketing machine which convinced you that smoking was cool and sophisticated all those years ago.

But this was a very sneaky spell, because apart from an unpleasant taste and some coughing as your body rebelled from your first drag, these sneaky cigarettes appeared to do no harm. The spell was cast and the transformation into a frog began to take place.

The second sneaky part of the spell was that over time you just put the effects of the evil witch down to aging. The wrinkles, the lack of energy and stamina, the heavy breathing under even light exertion, and so many other slow developing issues.

The frogs into princes and princesses analogy came to mind because in this world there are just a few things you can stop doing which has such a rapid and profound effect on your wellbeing.

Stopping drugs alcohol or smoking all give people a second chance at living a long healthy life, and the best news is that unlike quitting alcohol or drugs, stopping cigarettes is most often a quick painless process.

And even when there is some pain, its stub your toe kind of pain, not screaming in a detox hospital pain.

You may not agree with my pain analogy, but it’s probably because you have tried the less successful and more painful ways in the past. Such as cold turkey, toxic nicotine replacement or mind altering pharmaceuticals.

In the dark fairy tale of the smoker you don’t croak like a frog but you will likely croak from an avoidable and preventable illness. This is a tale with no happy ending unless you make a firm commitment to re-write this tragic tale.

Hypnosis may not be a magic wand or a kiss from the beautiful stranger in the fairy tales but it is, highly successful in helping the vast majority of people quit smoking. You just need to want the story to turn out well.

There are many triggers for smoking. Most are just learned habits, such as smoking when talking on the phone. But one of the biggest stumbling blocks to quitting is emotional smoking.

This falls into two categories which really are just one, but quite often smokers don’t see themselves in both.

  1. People who smoke to relax.
  2. People who smoke to manage their stress.

The reality is these are one and the same but often the emotional state at the time can be different.

Freedom from needing cigarettes to manage your life is the key to your future as a non-smoker.

There are three key elements in this process

  1. Understand that smoking doesn’t manage stress. When under stress your body produces a hormone from your adrenals called cortisol. In normal levels this is important for normal life. But under chronic physical or emotional stress this becomes a significant problem.

The high cortisol levels lower important hormones such as estrogen and testosterone and DHEA.

DHEA is basically your live long and feel good hormone, low levels cause you to feel more pain, feel tired and moody. The important thing is that smoking is a strong physical stress which causes the release of too much cortisol. If you understand nothing else then re-read this part.

  1. Understand that smoking has no upside whatsoever and that there is only harm with zero benefit. Because of the problems above this eliminates any imagined benefits, because just like the government ads state, every cigarette is doing you harm.

When you do something to your body, day in and day out that causes you harm it is not a stretch to realise that there is no benefit.

  1. Learn and use stress management tools in your life. Busy people and those that have never felt the benefits of stress management rarely give it any thought, or place any value on using ways to management it.

More often people look for external ways such as alcohol, cigarettes or drugs to manage their lives, and all of these ways fail.

Exercise reading or watching television are better choices but all stimulate the mind instead of calming it.

Spending time in nature, whether in a garden, a forest, by a stream, or at the beach are a big step forward. But it is not often possible to be in these places every day.

Introducing specific stress lowering methods while in hypnosis is the fastest way to create a viable alternative to false hope of cigarettes.

I have to admit to browsing my book shelf when looking for a title for this article. 7 Habits of self-destructive people is of course a cheap rip off from the classic business book by Stephen Covey, 7 habits of highly successfully people.

I have to admit I haven’t thought through an entire list of self-destructive habits, I’m sure you can make your own list, but certainly smoking would have to compete for a top listing. And it falls perfectly into the category of self-destructive.

In fact I can’t think of any positive grouping it could possibly below to. But deep down you already know that, it’s not cool, or sophisticated, or fashionable, or healthy, or likely to win you a heart or a job.

It’s just a rotten deadly stinking expensive, and life stripping habit.

Habit number one is to be proactive. Become more informed about smoking dangers, go right into the gory details. Now research the best way to quit, and you will quickly discover that hypnosis is the best by far.

Habit number two of the Covey book is to start with the end in mind. This is great advice. Clearly see yourself having already quit cigarettes.

Now work back a little, see yourself in a successful hypnosis session, all going well, you are relaxed and feeling good. You leave the session full of confidence and take a few deep clean breaths of fresh air.

Now see yourself feeling excited about going for your session, really looking forward to quitting for good, putting out that last smoke and saying goodbye like you would to a parasite that has been flushed from your body.

Go back earlier to picking up the phone and booking your hypnosis appointment, and even before that making your firm decision to quit.

Run this movie in your mind backwards and forwards, see it clearly, feel the benefits and the emotions and make it as real as possible. This process is like beginning to wipe the slate clean and sets you up perfectly for your quit hypnosis session.

You have already moved out of self-destructive mode into self-care mode. Psychologically speaking this is a huge shift which starts as soon as you make the decision to quit, and is strengthened with each step you take.

Quit Smoking…Punishment & Comfort

A client recently came back to see me. She had been doing well until she had a big bust up with her partner, so she resorted to smoking again. I asked her why she choose to smoke again and initially she couldn’t give me a clear answer.

But as I pressed the question she admitted that smoking was comforting to her. She admitted that she didn’t enjoy it, so being comforted by it was a bit confusing to her.

As we continued our pre-hypnosis chat I ran some ideas by her as they came to mind, when I mentioned punishment, it struck a cord and she teared up. She realised that she had used cigarettes as a form of self punishment over the years.

This usually comes from feelings of not being good enough or not deserving. So she was smoking for comfort and to punish herself. She could see the internal conflict, but couldn’t understand her actions.

I’m not a psychologist so I don’t try to explain why she is doing this. It was enough for her to become aware of her pattern, which had repeated throughout her life.

So when we did the hypnosis I could focus on this comfort, punishment cycle. The use of cigarettes as a comfort is fairly common and I address it regularly, but using cigarettes as a form of self-punishment was a new realisation to me.

This may not make any sense to you, so let’s take a closer look at it.

You are already using cigarettes for comfort. You smoke when you are stressed, tired, need to relax and need a break.

But you may not believe that you are smoking to punish yourself. So what else would you call sucking in toxic poisoness smoke into your lungs 10, 20 or more times per day, in the full knowledge that just like the ads say, every smoke is doing you harm.

You see the images on the packets, the television ads and perhaps you even know someone who has died or is dying from smoking and yet you continue to smoke. Call it what you want to, but self-punishment is as good a term as any.

It probably didn’t start that way, but at some point that’s exactly what happened. Denial won’t change anything, but quitting will. It will change so many aspects of your life to come that we could spend hours listing them.

So just do it, use hypnosis to put it behind you for good.

In the Douglas Adams classic “A hitch hikers guide to the universe’ So long and thanks for all the fish were the parting words of the dolphins as they left earth, just before it was destroyed to make way for a hyper-space bi pass.

In many movies there have been famous parting words. On Australian television there are a couple of anti-smoking ads which feature smokers on their death beds, the content of their parting words are implied.

It’s been said and written many times that people on their death beds never say they wished they worked more hours or lead busier lives. I’ve not seen it written but I will go out on a limb and state that no one has ever uttered the words that they wished they had smoked more, with their dying gasps.

So what about you? What if you just pull your head out of the sand for a minute and cast aside all of those crazy hopeful beliefs that smoking won’t kill you. What will your last words and thoughts be?

Will you claim that you enjoyed smoking and that everyone has to die sometime? Or will you be wracked with regret and sorrow.

The fact is that no one knows your future, but you can take steps to perhaps to create a brighter future. Or at least the best future possible for you.

You can’t change the past, every cigarette is a part of your history. But you can change the present, you can take action, you can quit smoking using hypnosis.

The only question is, which now moment will you choose to start your pushing away from a horrible, nasty, slow and painful death.

It could be now today, or now in July 2031. The similarities are that you will quit smoking just as easily now as you would then. The difference is however that you your body will have suffered so much more and that you will have less ability to recover.

Ekhart Toll Published a book entitled the power of now. So why not embrace the power of now, today. Often I hear people say that they are waiting for the right time to quit. Well I have to tell you that there never will be a perfect time.

Right now is as good as it gets, so take action pull your head out of the sand and book an appointment.
