Knowing how to quit smoking when you realise that it’s just a habit, but you keep on doing it anyway, is easier than you might think. A surprising number of smokers have already reached the conclusion that their smoking is just a habit and not an addiction. Quitting as an individual is difficult at times, but if you are in a relationship it can be made easier or harder depending on your partner.

If one person wants to quit, the other may resist but promise to only smoke outside. But once you quit you will be hyper aware of the smell of smoke on their clothing and hair. This can be a difficult situation especially if you had a habit of spending time together for a drink and a smoke.

You may feel you will want to stop these times, which were previously shared with a cigarette but it is important to keep your rituals going.

The only thing to ensure is that you both want to quit. If only one is quitting only to please the other then it is doomed to fail. Then there will be arguments and the reluctant quitter will soon take up cigarettes again. The stress of this can put pressure on the one who is keen and they may fold under pressure.

The ideal situation is when your partner and you decide to quit together. You choose the same day to quit. You offer each other support and you can continue the times you spent communicating together, but without cigarettes.

How To Quit Smoking, And Feel Like You Have Never Smoked In Your Life

For most smokers discovering and to quit smoking and then feeling like they have never smoked is a dream. If only this were possible. This is not only possible but it’s a daily reality for smokers all over the world.

During the initial chat portion of my quit smoking programme I tell my clients that 30% of people will quit and feel as if they have never smoked at all. 30% will have some thoughts of smoking such as when having a coffee, but this is just a passing thought.

30% will have to be vigilant especially where alcohol is involved, usually lots of it. As alcohol tends to diss-inhibit there is a risk that you will smoke or more likely someone will just light one up and give it to you.

5% will need another session and 5% will simply not be able to quit in my clinic.

So what happens to the 30% who quit without any further thought? In my experience they have a few things in common.

1. They are 100% committed to quitting. They have reached a point of realising there is absolutely no benefit for them in smoking any longer.

2. They fill out there pre session questionnaire in specific detail. This means they have taken the time to really think about what smoking is doing to them. Those who don’t take the time to properly consider their answers are usually still in some denial about their smoking habit.

3. They accept the new information they receive about cigarettes, for example that smoking actually causes more anxiety than relaxation. Some want to debate the issue, which is simply a scientific fact.

4. Even though they may be nervous they approach the hypnosis with a sense of adventure and anticipation.

5. They do the recommended follow up instructions.

While there is a degree of uncertainty as to exactly who will quit with no feelings of having ever smoked, the chances are greatly enhanced when you follow the five steps above.

But don’t despair if you quit and still have some thoughts about smoking, this will be the experience for many people. Just stick to your programme and always remember to never ever have one cigarette, not one puff or draw on a smoke.

Why Quitting Smoking Is Different For Young People

What is special about young people, well plenty if you ask them. So why is it different for young people to quit smoking than someone older?

The longer someone smokes the more ingrained are their behaviors. If someone has smoked for 30 years they have probably smoked to relieve stress thousands of times. But someone who is nineteen and has smoked for four or five years has made that connection far fewer times.

But someone who is nineteen and has smoked for four or five years has made that connection far fewer times. For young people to learn how to quit smoking they must understand the differences between them selves and a long term smoker.

This applies to all the connections, including alcohol, on the phone, while driving etc. So you would assume that it is easier for a young person to quit than an older smoker who has smoked for much longer.

But,here’s the thing, if you are young you may not realise this, or you may deny it. I admire the enthusiasm and the self confidence of the young, but the self belief can translate to self delusion.

Most older clients will admit that in their younger years they didn’t worry about smoking because they believed that they could quit when they wanted to. Yet decades later they were still struggling.

Younger people typically think they are in control and they will quit whenever they like. The joke is on them. The other thing about young people is that they think they are bullet proof. It’s a combination of their self belief and their increased risk taking due to lack of mature frontal lobes.

This is a part of the brain that doesn’t fully mature until about age 25 The best way to get young people to quit smoking it’s to appeal to something that makes sense to them. Smoking makes you ugly is a campaign which worked well in the UK. It hit right at the heart of the fears of young women.

Smoking damages the skin by shortening the life span of an average cell. Plus smoking injects thousands of chemicals into each and every cell. Smoking can make you impotent. This obviously hits hard at young men.

Their ego’s can and will be influenced by the risk of failing to perform because of smoking. This happens because of compromised circulation and toxic chemicals affecting the hormone systems.

For younger smokers perhaps of school age some direct leverage can be applied. A recent example was the parents threatened to remove the access to a young man’s motor bike unless he quit.

He wanted to but felt that he would be estranged from his friends. Fortunately being estranged from his motor bike was even more powerful. for him this was the most powerful way to quit smoking.

Quitting smoking may seem daunting, especially if a person has had tried and failed in the past.

If for example a person has failed six times then when they try again they bring the combined stress of failure from those past six experiences to this new attempt to quit. It’s no wonder that they find it difficult.

For many people they have literally failed before they even get started. So instead of using the power of past failures we can use the power of past experience. The best way to do this is in hypnosis or at least a very relaxed way.

You can consciously think back to times in your life when you have experienced success. It could be big things or small things. Earning a degree or winning a ribbon in a running race at school are a couple of examples.

Notice your posture, your breathing your voice etc. Notice how the successful you, moves and communicates. As you connect with the success in your life, just notice where in your body you feel it. e.g. is there a warm feeling in your chest as you recall those pleasant memories.

Once you identify the place where you feel success, you can then access this place and those feelings any time you want. The next thing to do is think amount quitting smoking, and to also connect with this warm feeling in your chest.

The idea is to bring up the feelings of success as you think about quitting. Now you start to connect success with quitting. Soon your fears of failure will fade away leaving you with a strong feeling that quitting will be easy for you.

In fact the more you are in contact with this warm place the easier you know it will be to quit smoking for life. This important shift may be a defining moment in your life. In fact as you quit smoking you will feel confident that you can use this same method to create change in your life.

The added success you now feel will be a powerful springboard to other changes such as weight loss or pain control. In fact anything that you want to change, you have the power.

Most people will find the cash for smokes, even if they are struggling. While money spent on smokes isn’t a reason for quitting, often money is a reason to not quit.

You can quit for free, but few manage it, many methods cost between $300 and $500. This money would be recouped in a few weeks.

But many many times smokers delay and delay, finding reasons not to quit. The car needs new brakes, another bill has come in. Sure some things need to be attended to, but the savings are so immediate, so not having the cash is just another excuse.

How To Quit Smoking – When You Are Surrounded By Smokers

Within any group of smokers there will be one person who bites the bullet and quits first. Being surrounded by smokers can be quite a challenge. The decision to finally quit can be hard enough but having to return to your smoking friends can only make it a whole lot harder.

The act of quitting using hypnosis is no harder or easier if you are part of a group, but it’s important for your therapist to know about your friends so that they can include suggestions about being able to remain a no smoker even if you are surrounded by smokers and even if they were to blow smoke in your face.

You need to be aware that some of your friends will support you. They are most likely waiting to see how you go before following in your steps.

Other friends will make it tricky by giving you a hard time, teasing you with cigarettes, this will be annoying but just hold true to your determination to be a non smoker.

A small number of people in your life will actively try and sabotage you. They may see your success as their failure. They will want to try and bring you back to the group. Beware of these people, they do not have your interests in mind.

After quitting you will become all too aware that you are different. If you want to keep socialising you will have to be prepared to be in the smoking areas at bars etc.

Initially this may be tricky and you will need to ask for their support, if you choose to remain in the bar or restaurant.

This request of support will quickly sort out the true friends from just the smoking buddies. Often the only bond smokers have is cigarettes, and when that bond is broken they realise they don’t actually anything in common.

Once you have gotten over the initial period it may be important that you return to some of your old social habits. Drinks after work in the smoking area may just be a part of your life as a non smoker.

Being surrounded by smokers will certainly be a big test but once you pass you will be able to survive any test of your resolve.

Quit Smoking Before You Are Coughing Up Blood

What is it about human nature that allows us to continue to engage in dangerous behaviours in spite of all the warnings. Why would someone continue to smoke for a whole year after starting to cough up blood. And the big question is how do we quit smoking before it’s too late.

There are only three reasons anyone continues to smoke.

1. They are stupid and think that all the health warnings and consequences won’t apply to them. This may sound harsh but there are people who think exactly this way. When pressed they laugh it off saying, you have to die from something.

2. Two they really like smoking and are convinced that they can stop whenever they like. Many younger smokers think this way. Older smokers report thinking the same way, until they realised they couldn’t quit as easily as they thought they could.

3. Fear of stopping. Fear is the key. Fear of being able to manage their lives without smoking. Fear of not knowing what to do without cigarettes. Fear of being able to handle stress or social situations. The question I ask every smoker is, what do you think non smokers do to manage their lives, their stress, boredom, social situations etc. The standard answer is, I have no idea.

Keys to stopping smoking.

1. Make a clear decision to quit and have faith in yourself that you can.

2. Consciously understand that non smokers do just fine without cigarettes. They are not walking around nervously looking for some drug to calm them. If a non smoker feels they need to do something with their hands at a social function, they don’t reach for a cigarette.

They pick up a glass, hold a plate of food or just feel a little awkward for a will, but whatever they do they manage. If a non smoker is stressed, again they don’t even consider lighting up a stick of combustible plants. They find another way, and they survive. The non smoker enjoys the taste of the food and coffee without adding the flavour of burnt tobacco to ruin it.
