A client once said to me that he couldn’t remember an important time in his life when he didn’t have a cigarette with him. It’s common for people to say that their smoke is their friend, many believe that they are too addicted to quit or that they can’t manage their stressful lives  but no matter how addicted you think you are, you are much more than your smoking habit, and you deserve much more out of life.

Imagine for a moment back when you were a child. You had hopes and dreams for your future, but then you see a picture of someone whose life seems to be dictated by a routine of topping up with nicotine.

Your fingers are stained, your lungs feel heavy and every morning that cough seems to last longer. You see you have spent a fortune on cigarettes and all you got in return was having to stand outside at restaurants and family functions.

Of course you realise that you are not your smoking habit, but unfortunately society sees you as the person who is quickly becoming the social outcast, people treat you differently, especially when they can smell tobacco on you.

Judgements are made about you, perhaps unfairly, but you are up against an increasingly negative bias against smokers. You then get the bad news from the doctor, a strange feeling in your chest which you tried to ignore turned out to be the very thing that you felt sure would never affect you.

  I’m sure this isn’t how you expected your life to pan out, the good news is that you can consign most of this to the past and move on. Plus hopefully you can head off any of the serious consequences, and you will absolutely have a lot more cash freed up for the important things in life.

Quitting can appear to be too hard for many people who have smoked for a long time and had a strong relationship with cigarettes, even if it’s not the kind of relationship you would tolerate with another person.

One where your so called friend steals from your wallet daily, keeps you away from others and eventually takes your health as well. Just when I think I’ve heard every story about starting smoking a new one comes along. During world war 2 people sheltered in underground tunnels during the bombing raids. The London blitz was prolonged and deadly.

A client, whose husband had lived through the Blitz as a child, began smoking because children were routinely given cigarettes as a way to manage the stress of the bombings. After many failed attempts he finally managed to quit in his late sixties when serious health problems prevailed.

Smoking is all about connections to places, feelings, people etc, so can you image how powerful the connection to cigarettes for this man, who as a child cowered in poorly lit tunnels, full of people experiencing a truly terrifying experience.

The fear he would have felt drawing on a cigarette as bombs rained down from the sky, would have created an extremely powerful link, which remained with him for decades.

Every time he tried to quit, he was overwhelmed by stress and couldn’t manage without his smokes, until his failing health forced him to push through and finally succeed.

I’ve discussed in previous articles why smoking doesn’t relieve stress, it’s a matter of simple biochemistry, nicotine gives a short relief in the brain, followed by a release of stress hormones from the adrenals.

A connection between smoking and stress comes about either from a gradual exposure to seeing others smoke when stressed, and adopting the same habit, or as in this gentlemans case exposure during a period or incidence of high stress.

This connection came back to haunt him each time he tried to quit. You may be experiencing similar difficulties, but the good news is that the man in this article could have broken free decades earlier and so to you can free yourself from the chains of smoking.

The reason that hypnosis is so effective in helping people to quit is that it gently and easily pries apart the connections and shatters the beliefs which keep you lighting up whenever a stressful situation arises.

Quitting Smoking…Why You Need Both Conscious And Unconscious Priming

Priming is the action of putting a process in place which you can continue to build on. Using conscious and unconscious priming to help you to quit smoking is like have a great support team behind you.

Conscious priming is any action which will support your quit programme, some include:

  1. Cutting back on a few smokes each day.
  2. Increasing your activity levels.
  3. Delaying each cigarette by a few minutes.
  4. Deep breathing when faced with a craving.
  5. Making good food choices.
  6. Reducing alcohol intake
  7. Doing some specific relaxation such as mindfulness meditation.
  8. Starting a new habit, such as a few simple exercises or positive affirmations every time you leave the bathroom. The reason is this is something everyone does several times a day.
  9. Doing some daydreaming, seeing yourself in past smoking situations but now as a non-smoker.
  10. Creating a simple diversion, which you will do when the thought of a cigarette comes up.
  11. Take a cigarette and blow the smoke out through a tissue, take a moment to consider the implications of the sickly yellow stain on the paper.
  12. Look at each smoke and talk to it as if it were a person who you just had to get out of your life.
  13. Look in the mirror and state out loud that you have had enough and are sick to death of smoking, then take a deep breath and state that you are a non-smoker.

Obviously you won’t be doing all of these, after all if you did, then you wouldn’t have time to smoke! So pick a few and stick with them. Make these strategies a part of your smoking day.

Non conscious priming is by comparison very easy, and far more relaxing. It involves hypnosis, which is broken into several elements.

  1. The conscious priming as a mental preparation.
  2. The chat about triggers and perceived difficulties.
  3. The discussion about stress not being helped by smoking. There is usually a point of cognition when the smoker realises for themselves that it doesn’t help.
  4. The understanding of how hypnosis works, what it does and what it can’t do, for example your mind can’t be controlled.
  5. Learning that nicotine is at most a small player in smoking, it is mostly about a powerful habit.

Then you just relax into a pleasant hypnosis, this is when your old connections to smoking are released and replaced by new thoughts of breathing fresh clean air and living a long healthy life.

We like to believe that we know what we are thinking, that we know what we want and don’t want, but modern neuroscience is proven that just the opposite is often true. The standard for gaining peoples opinion, which includes quitting smoking, has been the long revered focus group.

A group of people are brought together and asked their opinions on products. In many studies smoking has been a topic, asking feedback from such things as grisly cancer images on packets to plain packaging on cigarettes.

The typical result is that people declare that these scary photos on the packets make them want to quit smoking. But put these same people in a Functional Magnetic Imaging machine, which can accurately measure brain activity and the result, is very different.

In the MRI the same graphic images of suffering smokers were flashed on a screen, instead of feeling revulsion, most people simply feel a strong craving for a cigarette. So why is, this the case?

In focus groups people apply logic to the process. After all why wouldn’t you feel bad about seeing such images, it’s only sensible, plus it’s expected, and the group dynamic comes into play.

Individuals tell me something different, they don’t have any strong feeling either way because they simply filter out the image. To then the packet and everything about it represents smoking.

Perhaps the very first time a smoker sees the graphic photos on their packet there is a moment or two of fear, which is quickly overcome as they light up there smoke. But very quickly the filtering process kicks in, and soon the smoker doesn’t even see them. You know this is true, don’t you.

Non-smokers have a strong reaction and can’t possibly understand someone doing something as crazy as smoking. Yet many of these same people will happily fill their bodies with fatty greasy food, virtually designed to block their arteries. They too have filtered out all the health warnings and have allowed their desire to overrun any health concerns.

The solution is for you to simply decide that you have had enough of smoking, in spite of the internal desires, then to use the power of hypnosis to go to the core of your unconscious mind and create a new powerful positive feeling about your life, your health and a negative feeling toward smoking.

Quitting Smoking…What does Quitting Mean Anyway?

It may seem obvious that if you have stopped cigarettes that you have quit. But at what point after quitting smoking can you safely say that you are a non-smoker.

After 48 hours your blood stream will be free from nicotine. But it will take much longer for the remnants to leave your fatty tissue, however this isn’t an issue as the amount entering your blood stream at any time is minute and bundled up with hundreds of other toxic fat soluble chemicals. While this doesn’t sound very appealing it is a natural process.

It is argued that it can take 30 days to create a new habit, so it follows that the 30 day mark is very important, so you can give yourself a big pat on the back at this point.

For many smokers who have quit before there may be important time frames which will have will require some extra vigilance. It could be three months or twelve months. One client reported that he had failed three times in the past at nine months.

There was nothing magical about nine months, the first time was just bad luck, the second time was because of some anxiety about the previous time and the third time became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

He admitted when pressed that he used this as an excuse as he still liked to smoke. So knowing your patterns of behaviour may be helpful, as long as you take added care at these times.

A common reason people return to smoking is either a very stressful event or a special social event involving smokers often from the past. This is a clear indicator that fragments of the old habit are still tucked away just waiting for some event to occur.

This is where hypnosis comes into its own as a quit smoking therapy. It is the only way to clear all of those old connections and beliefs about cigarettes and any potential for returning to smoking in the future.

Hypnosis allows open access to the unconscious mind. This is where all of your connections to smoking are housed. Fortunately with the right suggestions your unconscious can be persuaded to let go of these thoughts. Then new positive healthy non-smoking ideas will gently take up those same spaces.

Quitting smoking…The Pathway To Success

According To Business Guru Jim Rohn the pathways to both success and failure are just a series of steps, both simple to do and easy not to do. So how does this apply to you quitting smoking?

A very common story I hear from smokers who had quit and then returned to cigarettes is that they started with just one. This may have happened in a stressful situation, or a special event, or just a moment of alcohol fueled stupidly.

The pathway was simple, just one then 2 or 3 a day and soon within weeks back to being a full smoker. At any point in the first few days they could have made a simple decision and just stopped, but it was so easy to keep going.

The good news is that you can reverse engineer the process to help you to quit simply and easily. Like any major change in life this comes with a decision. That is, a no going back cross your heart and hope to die type of decision.

But there are a couple of simple steps before that. Firstly you must find a couple of whys. The first why, is why to stop. You know all the common reasons plus a few of your own; these whys are the things you want to leave behind in your life. The next why, is why be a non-smoker, this may feel like the same but it is a positive set of reasons which will draw you into the future.

Next simple step is to imagine yourself, surviving easily as a non-smoker. Visualise being in regular situations without a cigarette.

Now you move to clearly identifying exactly how you will feel as a non-smoker. Words such as proud, successful, clean and happy are common thoughts. So just allow those feelings into your life now!

Next just call and make an appointment with your hypnotherapist, do any homework requested of you and turn up with a strong sense of expectation of success even if you feel nervous. Then your next step on the pathway to success is to follow through on any homework given after your session.

The last step is to feel grateful for quitting and every time you see a smoker or smell a cigarette you take just a moment to congratulate yourself for having done such an important thing for yourself and you loved ones.

If you smoke electronic cigarettes you are engaging in the new celebrity trend of Vaping. Apparently it’s cool to look stupid in 2015. Most of these Vaping devices deliver nicotine, it would of course be cheaper to buy some nicotine insecticide and just lick the lid.

You might die immediately but it’s just a faster way to go than slowly poisoning yourself. In Queensland for good reasons liquid nicotine is illegal so the Vaping is done using Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerin Liquid.

Currently there doesn’t appear to be any serious risks just throat and mouth inflammation, vomiting, nausea and cough. But think back or google back:

In the fifties and early sixties cigarettes were considered good for you. Some brands even promoted lung health.

In the early seventies it was discovered that smoking caused stress and didn’t solve it. About this time researchers first announced that smoking causes cancer. It took a further eight years before legislators and the medical community agreed to the findings.

Decades later well informed people are still taking up smoking in spite of all the known information. The point of this historical background is that Vaping is an unknown quantity. We know it causes mild problems, but the question is given the history of smoking, why on earth would you want to become just a potential statistic in the history of Vaping.

 In the words of Wikipedia currently the limited evidence suggests that electronic cigarettes are safer than traditional cigarettes, and they carry a risk of addiction for those taking up the habit.

So safer than cigarettes is like saying that falling of a motor cycle at 100 mph is safer with a helmet on! Which brings me back to the title of Vaping the new insane habit.

Think of all the fun entertaining things you could do instead of inhaling a combusted chemical into your lungs, which your body has to then find some way of dealing with, hopefully, but then I wonder how many smokers have thought the same thing in the past.

Most of the Vaping devices which are promoted to me on the internet come from China, not perhaps the most reliable of chemical sources. Given the numbers of people who are taking up e smoking I’m probably just banging my head on the wall trying to save a few people from themselves.

Maybe I’ll just develop the all new Vaping hypnosis programme for when those who still inhale, wish they didn’t!

Quit Smoking…But My Doctor Told Me To Start Smoking Again

This may sound ridiculous and frankly unbelievable. I know that only the rarest of Doctors would ever recommend a patient take up smoking and that the vast majority try their best to encourage patients to quit.

But I have heard this story from clients several times, and hearing twice in the past fortnight prompted me to write this article. This is quite different from the bad old days when doctors would routinely prescribe cigarettes for children and people of a nervous disposition.

This came from the lies of cigarette companies who it has been shown simply bought off some doctors and an ignorance of the real risks involved.

But this is 2015, there is no ignorance and so there is no excuse. In one instance my client quit then developed a strange skin condition. His specialist suggested it was related to his quitting and advised him to start smoking again!

When he came to me he had to two problems. 1. He was smoking and 2. He still had his skin condition. At least after hypnosis he only had the skin problem to contend with. In the Naturopathic tradition skin problems are often treated with herbs which cleanse the blood.

It’s an old fashioned concept, but one thing for certain is that smoking does not cleanse the blood, or anything else. It’s plainly obvious that cigarettes cannot help in any way.

The other recent client was advised to start cigarettes again because of his anxiety. This would have been an understandable response in the 1960’s but in this day and age it is simply unprofessional laziness and negligence.

Sure there are many smokers who use nicotine as a crutch to help their anxiety, I see them regularly in my clinic, but there are ways to help these people quit without stress. There are certainly many medical interventions possible, but it requires some time and effort on the part of the practitioner.

Perhaps those very few medicos would be reminded of the oath “To do no harm”

In this day and age there is absolutely no logical sane reason for anyone to smoke. It doesn’t relieve stress, doesn’t help anyone to lose weight, or any of the crazy reasons that unfortunately some people still believe.

If you want to help yourself, just quit, get some hypnosis help and it will be easier than you might ever imagine. And if some lazy crazy doctor advises you to smoke just walk out, and I certainly wouldn’t pay for such advice.

Quitting Smoking…Quit Now Quit Fast

It’s kind of interesting, that most of my quit smoking clients have smoked for many years, and it’s not uncommon for them to carry my card for over a year until they pick up the phone and book their hypnosis appointment.

At this point they just want to quit now and quit fast. And that’s just fine with me. They suddenly have the commitment, they realise it’s the right time so we jump in. Most methods of stopping cigarettes promote a gradual removal of smokes.

Nicotine replacement and pharmaceuticals fit this exact model, and it surprises me that even some hypnosis systems promote multiply visits. On further inspection this type of hypnosis seems to fit a medical model of multiple short sessions to suit consultation times.

Hypnosis can be conducted over several sessions but just cutting back doesn’t achieve anything. Another problem is that if you are told that it will take several sessions, then psychologically you know you can keep smoking until the last session.

So my view is why not just shift the quitting phase straight to the first session. Then if a client wants another session we can focus on any stress issues which they feel may well challenge them in the future.

In my opinion the extra pre-sessions serve no purpose other than putting extra cash in the practitioner’s pocket. To me it can also signal a lack of confidence on the part of the therapist, or simply this was the way they were taught, and they haven’t looked beyond that early teaching.

One client who remains my oldest client to date at 84 years of age, had never tried to quit after 65 years of puffing away. She choose me simply because I promised that she would succeed in just one session, and it seemed like it was the right time for her.

She told me she didn’t want to waste time, so just 90 minutes to quit was attractive to her. So she booked,  she attended her session and she quit successfully.

So perhaps you are reaching the point of being ready to release cigarettes from your life, now you know that it can happen quickly, so it’s up to you to take action, pick up the phone and all you need to do is bring your commitment to the session. Then just let the process unfold, and enjoy being a non-smoker for life, freeing you from the clutches of smoking forever.

Most benefits of stopping cigarettes are well known but will only reveal themselves once you have kicked the habit for good.

Some may even surprise you.

  1. Do you know someone who suffers from an auto immune disease such as Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupis. If so you will know how much they suffer. If you want to join their ranks just keep smoking because every cigarette increases your risk of acquiring such a health problem. But when you quit smoking you significantly reduce that risk.

 

  1. Unfair judgements. Whether we admit it or not we are all judging others all the time. In a way it’s a basic survival mechanism. Is this person safe, honest, trust worthy, or can I do business or have dinner with this person.

 

When someone sees you smoking or smells cigarettes on your clothes or hair, they make a judgement, and it may be unfair, it may be unjust, but it may affect your work, your business or just the way you are treated. By quitting you never run this risk of the first impression playing against you.

 

  1. Alzheimer’s is a sad condition, which has been proven to be associated with smoking, to continue you are now fully aware that you are increasing your risks. If it already runs in the family then you could be asking for trouble. You now know exactly what to do to reduce your risk!

 

  1. Who likes cold feet? Nobody really, that’s because it’s unpleasant, smoking reduces your peripheral circulation, which means you have a reduced blood flow to your feet, and a reduced capacity to pump that blood back to your heart.

 

No one can guarantee comfortable warm feet when you quit but they certainly will be better than if you don’t. But please be aware that poor peripheral circulation is the first step down the slippery road to amputation!

 

  1. If you are contemplating any surgery, then think again. Smoking compromises would healing and so it increases risk of excessive bleeding and infection. This is exactly why many surgeons refuse to operate until a smoker quits. Of course this applies to any minor injury you incur. Just quit!
  2. It has been portrayed as romantic to smoke after sex. Maybe it’s the enticing aroma, or the breath freshening effect of an ashtray. But the reality is it’s not just your feet that will suffer from poor circulation, both male and female genitals are literally being sucked dry of blood when you smoke.

This list could be much longer, but you already have enough reasons to quit, all you need to do is book your hypnosis session and get that circulation flowing again!

Quitting Smoking…My Children Were Making Smoking Miserable

I laughed when a client told me that her children are making smoking miserable for her. She likes to sit outside with a glass of wine and have a relaxing smoke. But her three children had launched a campaign of disruption.

Coming out one at a time nagging her about smoking and its dangers. She said she was losing the pleasure of smoking. This was interesting because she had already told me that she didn’t like smoking anymore!

Even though she didn’t actually like the taste or smell of cigarettes, she liked the idea of what she perceived smoking had offered her in the past.

She was a little nostalgic for all of those times she had escaped her family duties by going outside and relaxing with a cigarette. Within that sentence was her true answer. The cigarette wasn’t relaxing her at all, she was relaxing with a cigarette!

Now, she has successfully quit with hypnosis, she relaxes outside in her favourite place just fine. Her children let her relax in peace, mostly, but now their interruptions are for normal kid’s reasons, not to try and protect their mother and themselves.

As a smoker you may not think about how your children feel about your habit. But they worry about their parents, they have heard lots of stories of orphans and they fear you won’t be there for them and they fear being alone.

This may sound dramatic, but it’s, how many children feel, even if they don’t voice their concern.

So not only did my client save her own life, she relieved her family of a lot of unnecessary stress resulting in a much happier family life, not to mention mum doesn’t smell like an ashtray when she comes in from her outside relaxation spot any more.

Most benefits from quitting smoking are obvious, but some are only noticed when you have been freed from this toxic habit. Such as a more relaxed happier family, what is the value of this benefit to you, to your entire household and perhaps extended family.

The great benefit of hypnosis over any other method is that these important facts can be built into the session, the negatives can be enhanced leading to the positives being deeply re-enforced into your unconscious mind.

Quitting Smoking…The Great Escape

Do you remember the Steve McQueen movie the Great Escape? He made a run from the prisoner of war camp, on a motor cycle, leaping over a high fence to finally be free. Well that is what your smokes are. Certainly not great, and definitely not adventurous by any means, but still an escape no less.

Cigarettes are a way to hide from feelings and emotions which the rest of the world has to learn to manage, or not. Some have a strategy but some turn to drugs or food or gambling etc. Cigarettes, are also artificially used to create other feelings. But these feelings are usually accessed from within if we feel good about yourself, or from natural external sources such as friend’s family or even pets.

So I’m sure you can see that by smoking you are walking through the world completely out of touch with how these feelings operate. This explains why it is so difficult to quit using the old standard ways.

Because when you try, there is a huge gap in your life. There is a strong sensation of loss and an emptiness that can’t be filled. So what happens very often is that you will start smoking again.

Hypnosis offers a completely different way of quitting, the goal is to separate you from the routines and rituals you have created for yourself while you smoked. This requires no effort and no struggle at all.

You just decide this is what you really want for yourself, you give permission for hypnosis to occur, and then you just sit back and relax with a feeling of full expectation that you will succeed.

Quitting Smoking…I Wonder What Else I could Do?

Imagine for a moment, you have made the decision, you booked your quit smoking hypnosis appointment, and now with the aid of your expert practitioner you are free from smoking.

You have just walked away from an addiction which held you in its grip for many years. You have overcome a problem which has plagued the world for over hundreds of years.

If you consider what you have achieved, you may ask yourself, if I can quit cigarettes then I wonder what else I can do. Remember you stopped a habit you believed to be very difficult to overcome with hypnosis in just 90 minutes or so.

Maybe the sky is the limit. Perhaps this should change your thinking about the possibilities of your life forever.

Quitting Smoking…Whose Voice Is Controlling you.

Our conscious minds is full of hopes and dreams and plans and desires, but your unconscious mind is often directed by other people’s voices.

To successfully quit smoking you need the inner voice to be the same as the conscious voice. No I’m not suggesting you are crazy, and you’re not in a horror story but you are at effect from the influences in your life. Some of these influences are from you in your past.

Let’s say you started smoking at 14, which is the most common age of my clients. At that time you heard the voices of your peers, encouraging you to smoke. You wanted to be like them so you created the story that smoking is cool, or you look more grown up, or perhaps you felt like a rebel.

There were other voices, maybe adults who said smoking helped their stress, or their boredom or helped them to relax etc.

Then you heard some more voices which re-enforced the idea that cigarettes are hard to quit, or that they are too addicted to give up.

Some years down the track you change your mind about smoking, you now decide that it stinks, its harmful, its expensive, it’s anti-social, but your conscious efforts to quit fail because the old voices are two powerful, and too persistent, so you fail and just feel worse.

Maybe you stick nicotine patches on your body, but you notice that that the voices persist, and you realise that putting insecticide on your body couldn’t stop you wanting a cigarette with your coffee.

Even if you are one of the few who succeed this way, at some random time you will start again when one of the little voices starts again.

The single goal of hypnosis is to have you in charge of your unconscious, having the conscious desire and the unconscious voice on the same tem with the same message, therefore giving you the very best chance of success.

This is naturally occurring in those areas of your life where you have wanted to make a change and found it easy to do, no struggle, no internal battles, just smooth sailing.

Quitting Smoking…What Is Your change Style?

You may never have considered such a question, but it’s very important that you know. You want to quit smoking but it always seems like one size fits all when it comes to stopping smoking.

Perhaps you are a fast talking person fast decision making person who adopts ideas quickly, and you prefer bullet point explanations because you’re in a hurry.

Maybe you are the analytical type and need to hear all the instructions in fine detail.

Or more emotionally based and feelings will be your key to change. Stories hold your attention and you have a powerful imagination.

Or lastly the logical type who needs proof, and a paint by numbers approach, you don’t tend to imagine a different future unless it makes sense to you.

It’s no wonder that something as simple as a nicotine patch or a pharmaceutical drug has little success for smokers.

So how does knowing your change style help you? By choosing hypnosis, the most successful quit smoking method, you have an immediate advantage. Your practitioner can pick up on your style from the phone conversation, emails or when you come to the clinic.

Recently I received an email from a business person wanting to quit. The email tone reminded me of someone speaking in short clipped sentences. There were even a couple of complaints and we hadn’t even meet.

We all see the world in our own way, and our communication is just as individual, but there are several distinct ways we interact with the world and more importantly with ourselves.
