There is an old saying which says something like “Dream like you will live forever, Live like you will die today” When we are young such a saying may seem interesting at best, but as we age the idea of making each day count, takes on a high new importance.

So my question to you is, how does smoking fit into you making the most of each day, to living your life to the full.

So what if you don’t have any great aspirations of an amazing life, I assume you still want to live, and move and breathe and do the things which you enjoy. What if for a few moments you just let you mind drift into the future.

What would you like to do, what things haven’t you done that are still on your list. Who are the important people in this image. Do you see yourself as a healthy active person, or are you tired and ill. How does this make you feel?

If it doesn’t shake you up a bit then maybe do it again with more emotion and more clarity.

Of course you can do all these things and smoke. That is, until you can’t. Until either you slowly wind down as your lung capacity diminishes, or you are diagnosed with a life threatening condition. Either way your dreams won’t be of a long active future.

Do you remember the movie “The Dead Poets Society” the catch phrase was Seize The Day-Carpe Diem. It’s so easy to put things off. Too busy, too hard, too much stress etc. Existing today and living in the future.

Quitting Smoking…10% Of Australian Grocery Bills

Given that 20% of Australians smoke you wouldn’t imagine that 10% of all monies spent on groceries is still spent on cigarettes. Put in context this means that many smokers are spending a big proportion of their food budget on cigarettes.

They probably don’t see it this way. There would be money set aside for smoking, and the smaller food budget would be separate at least in their minds.

If I’m speaking to you, then you know exactly what I mean. You feel the financial of smoking every week, every time you open your purse or wallet to hand over your hard earned cash just to buy rotten cigarettes.

It’s also true that many smokers can afford to eat well and smoke, but “the cost doesn’t worry me” argument is a load of rubbish and if this is you then you know it.

The average smoker spends $6000 per year on cigarettes. No one is really OK about that, if you find yourself saying so, it’s just an excuse, you could invest the money, give it to charity, educate your child, so many better ways to spend your money.

It is often said that money is a poor motivator for quitting smoking, but I think that’s because most smokers try not to think about the money side of this deadly habit.

Supporting one or more charities?

Quit Smoking…I’m So Tired I’m Really so Upset

In the classic Beatles song the next line is “Even though I’m feeling so tired I’ll just have another cigarette, let me be alone awhile to give my nerves a rest”

I love the song and it sums up perfectly a couple of common connections that smokers  have with cigarettes,  and this concern them, when it comes to quitting, maybe you have asked yourself, what will I do with myself, how will I replace those quiet relaxing moments? How will I manage my stress when I quit smoking?

It’s not easy to see an answer when standing in your position as a smoker, but if you imagine taking a step into the shoes of a non smoker you can start to see new possibilities.

Perhaps the next time you are in a shopping mall, wander around for a few minutes and just notice all the non smokers going about their day, living their lives and surviving perfectly well without cigarettes.

Now go to the designated smoking area and watch the smokers, try not to join them, just observe them, just notice the ritual, some relaxed, some rushing the smokes, then notice the other people perhaps having a coffee.

Some are relaxed some are rushing their coffee. The point is there is little difference between the two groups, except that your group is smoking deadly chemicals.

Winding down and relaxing are conscious choices, they do not require smoking, it’s the time you allow yourself for some smokes that relaxes you, not the cigarette. Quitting smoking…The Downside Of Hypnosis

Hypnosis has been cited in science journals as the most successful way to quit smoking, yet some people remain concerned about the perceived downside of being hypnosis.

One of the most common questions I’m asked is whether I will make them cluck like a chicken. While this is often asked in jest, it can mask an underlying concern that their mind may be controlled in some way.

This is a natural worry, because most people have been exposed to television and stage hypnosis, and a lot of weird ideas, thoughts of hypnotists having near super powers.

But if such powers exist then why don’t we see headlines, stating that evil hypnotists are creating armies of zombies committing crimes.

I have to laugh because I couldn’t even hypnotise my son to empty the dishwasher without being to to.

And there is a simple reason why I couldn’t, it’s not because I’m a rubbish hypnotist, it’s because of of a couple of simple rules.

  1. You can’t make someone do something they don’t want to do.
  2. No one will act on a suggestion that goes against their moral code.

Hypnosis is successful only when a person wants a change in their lives, gives permission for that change to occur in hypnosis and is prepared to fully participate.

You may ask, how does it work when a hypnotist just grabs someone and says the magic words “sleep” and they slump forward. This is known as a rapid induction and some people are susceptible to this kind of instant hypnosis.

It is literally a shock to the system, not unlike when someone has heard some bad news or been in an accident and just appears stunned. But the same two rules still apply.

In the case of an accident victim it’s important to give simple suggestions of comfort.

Years ago I attended the funeral of a friend, he was thirty, died suddenly leaving behind a wife and two young children. It was such a sad event that I left in a kind of hypnotic state. At some point I found myself in a roadhouse cafe putting salt in my coffee.

At that time I snapped out of this state, and felt slightly alarmed that I had driven so far like this. Fortunately driving is mostly an unconscious action so my fellow travelers were perfectly safe.

Quit Smoking…Why Do Some Return After Years

Some of my first time clients tell me they have taken up smoking after as long as twenty years.  On one level, it defies belief, but there are two understandable underlying reasons.

  1. Humans have poor and selective memories. When you quit in just a few months, you will forget about waking up coughing, the shortness of breath climbing the stairs, the thousands of dollars spent each year, the myriad of health risks etc.

 

The simple solution is to watch the quit ads on television, and to remind yourself of the bad feelings every time you see someone smoking.

 

Plus over time you can selectively filter out all the downsides of smoking and allow only those memories of special times and events and people which were connected to smoking. If you allow this thinking to creep in then the feelings of smoking will slowly creep back in.

 

Again when you see smokers, remind yourself of the benefits of being free from the deadly habit of smoking.

 

  1. The more common problem is that a particular event which triggers you to start again. Perhaps a major life stress or maybe a reunion with some old smoking friends.

If you smoke again because of a big crisis in your life, then there are two issues. Firstly it’s a sign that your unconscious mind is still holding emotional connections to smoking. These feelings may have been buried deep through willpower but the stress has unleashed them.

This brings back the old beliefs that smoking somehow helps stress. Which of course is a complete mistake.

Secondly, you now have two issues to deal with. Your crisis problem, and now your smoking. That’s right because nicotine is a stress on your system it will only add to your woes. And then soon as the habit reasserts itself you will have the regret and anger at yourself for starting this stupid dangerous habit.

And take it from me you will feel stupid, and angry but never the less you will be smoking. And you will regret it.

If you smoke again just because of some reunion with smokers, then what on earth were you thinking about, you simply allowed all those old problems to be put aside for the sake of bonding over some deadly chemicals. This might upset you, but you know it’s true, don’t you!

Quit Smoking…Nicotine Replacement Therapy…Anyone For A Dose Of Pesticide?

The first stop for most smokers in their quest to quit is Nicotine replacement therapy. There are gums and patches of many differing strengths, but they have one thing in common. They don’t work.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent every year by desperate smokers. Many try them over and over again in vain. A testimony to their effectiveness is the fact that many of my clients admit to smoking while wearing patches.

So if nicotine was the big addiction then how could someone still smoke while having plastered patches over their shoulders, and surely if absorbing pesticide (nicotine) into your skin or mouth was the answer then smokers of the world would be able to easily quit their habit.

So why is it so popular? The number one reason is an incredibly successful long term marketing campaign by pharmaceutical companies which was so clever they have drawn in government health campaigns and the medical profession.

So how can they claim success for nicotine replacement therapy? Picture these tow scenarios.

1.You buy your patches, and take them home, determined to succeed, maybe there are other smokers there, perhaps you sit in your favourite smoking spot, or maybe you have had a stressful day.

You put your patches on, and make a coffee or have a beer to relax. Things you normally do with a smoke. You go to work and watch the smokers file out at morning tea. After a day or two you give in and bum a smoke. The success rate for this scenario is rated between 0% and 2%. Macquarie University study simply stated that it doesn’t work. In the UK under the freedom of information act they revealed a 2% success.

2. You answer an advertisement for a university controlled quit smoking study. You are inducted into the process with a group of people. Given free patches and instructed in their use.

You return periodically for follow ups, and your progress is monitored. The success in this environment is cited as 23%. So why the difference? It’s because you are primed to succeed.

 In such an environment corn flakes would probably be just as successful. What is curious is that even in a supportive situation the result is still on the low side.

One problem with all of the various types of replacement is that they can’t address the ingrained triggers of a smoking life time, and of course attempting to quit by absorbing a poison used as a pesticide.

Quitting Smoking…When Boredom Is A Big Problem

Every smoker has their triggers, some are routine, but some are a big deal. Boredom isn’t just a casual problem it can be a significant stress and therefore an important issue to address for some people to quit smoking.

For some people their boredom represents a major gap in their lives which they are filling with smoking. Here’s the problem, take away the smokes and the void seems like too much to fill. For the majority of smokers this is easily dealt with hypnosis.

Some people however are going to need to take specific action to fill those gaps in their lives, at least for a couple of weeks until they integrate being a non smoker into their life.

It may mean finally following through on a plan that you have thought about for a while, volunteering, extra work, exercise etc.  Whatever it is it will simply have to keep you occupied, during those void times.

One client filled her long periods of boredom with long phone calls. The problem was, she connected the phone to smoking. So she needed another strategy to manage the short term. She also wanted to lose weight so we made an agreement that during the day when she was bored, that she would walk around her large yard while on the phone.

Another decided to launch the home business she had been planning for ages. These strategies saved the day.

When you consider this carefully you may realise that some of your triggers may represent problems in your life that may need addressing.

Problems which are not solved by smoking, and that the longer you hide behind the smokes the worse the problem is likely to get, or at best it just ticks alone, making you miserable and you just keep smoking to try and feel better, while all along you are just making things worse.

This may sound overly dramatic, but quitting smoking isn’t like quitting peanuts or candy, it’s about saving your life, about reclaiming over a decade of your life and saving you potentially decades of poor health leading to severe health life limitations. Not to mention wasting a fortune.

So for most of you, hypnosis will solve your smoking issues, quickly and simply, but for some of you taking a good look at your life, and implementing some strategies to fill those gaps, then adding hypnosis into the mix will not only free you from the chains of cigarettes but open up your life to new wonderful possibilities.

Quitting Smoking…Some Facts Before Your Consider Zyban

Bupropion or its common name of Zyban is a commonly prescribed anti-smoking drug. Especially for patients with depression.

 Zyban has been linked with 24 reports of heart attack, five of stroke and one of TIA (mini stroke)

Reports show patients taking Zyban alone or in combination with Nicotine replacement therapy experiencing severe high blood pressure is applied to both those with pre existing condition and those without.

The TGA states that there is limited clinical experience establishing the safety of Zyban in patients with a recent history of heart attack or unstable heart disease.

To the general public, this may seem strange that a commonly prescribed drug is risky for patients with heart disease. Given that being a smoker is already a risk factor for such heart problems, it’s very curious that more scrutiny hasn’t been payed to its safety.

Other common side effects are agitation, dry mouth, insomnia, headache, nausea, constipation and tremor. Seizures may also occur at higher doses, this can be an issue for patients already taking medications which raise their threshold for seizures.

It may be just my bias but if a vitamin or herb caused even a fraction of such reactions, the media would be in melt down, shock jocks would be screaming into their microphones and morning television hosts would be causing mass hysteria, and baying for blood. The supplement would be promptly banned, and the world would be considered a safer place.

Ok so most pharmaceutical drugs have side effects, it’s often a trade off to get relief from some problem.

So let’s weight up the risk of stroke or heart attack against the benefits of quitting smoking. Of course smoking is highly risky, but here’s the thing:

Quitting smoking is easier than you think. Just as you were conditioned to smoke by peer pressure, and then the conditioning continued by the media, and drug companies, doctors and fellow smokers convincing you that it’s so hard to quit.

Well here is another simple fact. Using hypnosis you can and will quit smoking. Quickly and far more easily than you could ever imagine possible. In hypnosis we bypass all your beliefs, your fear and your resistance.

Quitting Smoking…Some Facts Before Your Risk Champix

If you believe Pfizer pharmaceuticals their anti smoking drug Varenicline,  Champix as its known  in Australia or Chantix in other parts of the world, is completely safe.

In their words “It’s important to remember that post marketing reports do not always establish a cause and effect relationship between a medicine and a reported adverse event.” This is just spin to deny the devastating effect this drug causes.

The Australian medical observer on the 10.10.14 reported that Champix accounted for more suicidal, self injurious and homicidal thoughts than any other drug between 2007 and 2013, out numbering any other drug by threefold.

For homicidal ideas the margin was five times! In spite of this the FDA updated the drugs US label to tone down statements linking Champix to serious neuropsychiatric events. This shows clearly that how much power this giant pharmaceutical has.

On October 1 a PBS restriction on Champix was changed, allowing relapsing adult smokers treated with one course to have a second course after six months. This means your government is prepared to double your risk of a serious health situation. In spite of current health concerns.

In my practice as a clinical hypnotist I have heard numerous accounts of adverse responses to Champix from my clients. Including:

  • Strong nausea.
  • Frightening nightmares.
  • Overwhelming feelings of unsettling weirdness.
  • Loss of creativity. Clients reporting an inability to write, paint etc.
  • One report of a complete psychotic break, a psych nurse experienced this so she knew exactly what was happening.
  • One client who had had a heart attack, directly attributed to Champix and reported to the TGA
  • Clients with pre existing depression ( a contra indication for Champix) experiencing significant
  • Multiple clients reported feeling severe disassociation and became fearful for their wellbeing.

John Hopkins university researchers in 2011 reported a 72% increase in the risk of heart attack for smokers who take Champix (Chantix) this was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

Naturally Pfizer argued that the heart attack rates were lower than the study indicated. This must be cold comfort for those unfortunate smokers who, already had an increased risk of cardio vascular problems, were then prescribed a drug which just boosted their chance of heart attack. And for all too many this was exactly the result.

Compare this to hypnosis, which only risks are a numb bum from sitting in a chair for an hour or more. No harm can come from this process, but the upside is life changing. That is you becoming a non smoker for life.

Quit Smoking Hypnosis…Will You Be Clucking Like A chicken?

The most common question I am asked by clients when they come in for their quit smoking session is “Will you make me cluck like a chicken?

My answer is always, do you want to cluck like a chicken? We have a laugh and then I describe how stage hypnosis is a performance, and that the people who come on stage are carefully selected and most importantly they are willing to play.

They are the real performers they want to be hypnotised, they are eager to be the centre of attention and so having them do fun things is easy.

The most important thing to remember is that it is not possible to make these people do anything they they ethically or morally wouldn’t agree to.

So you come in for your quit smoking session. You are a little anxious, but this is completely natural, after all you are making a big change in your life and at this stage you are not sure how it will work.

You then learn that you have given your permission to only quit smoking, not to hand over your wallet or cluck like a chicken, so you begin to relax.

You feel comfortable when you discover that there is no such thing as mind control. Just imagine that if it were possible hypnotists everywhere would be living on private islands with their subjects doing their bidding all over the world.

As I say to clients, I could easily hypnotise my son to easily pass his driver’s test, but not to automatically empty the dish washer. Simply because he didn’t want to.

It has to be in your interest to change, you need to be committed to quitting smoking which goes much deeper than clucking like a chicken.

Quitting Smoking…Hypnosis Is Not Just A Party Trick

Over the past 200 years hypnosis or Mesmerism has been used to entertain and at times frighten people. But with the use of Hypnosis for quitting smoking, weight loss, pain control, surgery and child birth to name a few, the field of medical hypnosis has gained main stream acceptance.

Yet for most people their only experience is stage shows or television, yet they don’t even realise they have been in hypnotic trances hundreds of times.

The beauty of television is that anything can appear real. I cringe sometimes when I see the terrible attempts at hypnotic therapy. It’s like a doctor watching a medical show which gets the technical details all wrong.

Stage shows are fun but it’s more about performance than hypnosis. The people chosen are extroverts, probably full of alcohol and up for fun. The nervous person in the back row would never be chosen, for the simple reason, that you can’t make someone do something hey don’t want to do.

We all have been in hundreds or perhaps thousands of hypnotic trances. Every time we focus intently, such as driving, watching television, a computer screen, reading or in the old days of rote learning at school. Chanting and repeated prayer also creates a trance state.

In this natural state we can easily take on new ideas, but in many of those above it’s about getting you to buy products.

In therapeutic hypnosis, we have a single goal, to help you make the changes which you desire. All it takes is your permission to be hypnosised and your commitment to change.

Some people believe they can’t be hypnosised, even though they have never attempted it. This idea is usually a fear of the unknown. Or a belief that they are too strong to allow hypnosis. Quitting Smoking…Southbank Cafes and Relaxing…Or Not!

You have been smoking for years, you like to smoke to relax and after meals. But the cafes and restaurants of Southbank Brisbane don’t permit such activities these days.

So you leave the cafe or restaurant and walk some distance to find a quit spot well away from food and families having a picnic on the nearby lawns. Maybe it’s a hot summers day or evening raining.

Your friends are sipping coffee or a cold beer at the end of their meal. Relaxing and enjoy some conversation.  And once again you are the one who has to leave to meet your needs for a smoke. And again the pleasant flavours of good food removed by the burnt acrid taste of combusting tobacco.

As the television ad says “That isn’t living” In the past you all might have been chatting over the after dinner smoke, but most likely you are on your own.

You return to the table the smell of smoke obvious to all your friends. They mightn’t say anything but some will be annoyed.

On the other hand you have your meal; you relax, chat and enjoy a drink. Feeling good you glance across the road and see a smoker sucking hard on a cigarette, trying to get as much nicotine in as quickly as possible in the light drizzle.

Hi Future Non Smokers

 

I grew up in Toowoomba and my parents still live there so I have a soft spot for this inland city. Smokers I see here come from a wide area, from the city itself and extending out to the gas line construction areas like Chinchilla and Roma.

Of course all the smokers in this area fall into the same three groups as smokers do everywhere.

  1. They want to keep smoking and don’t care what anyone says.
  2. Are sick of smoking but not yet committed to themselves to quit.
  3. Have had enough of cigarettes, and in spite of feeling anxious and even doubting themselves, they have committed to their future well being and so they take the next step to research quitting and book their quit appointment.

I know that because you are reading this you are at 2.5 maybe 3. You know all the facts, you don’t need to see any more scary pictures, don’t need any more government warnings or finger pointing.

Hi Future Non Smokers

Quitting Smoking on the Sunshine Coast brings all the same challenges that smokers experience anywhere. We do have a high number of fly in fly out workers. Many of them face a unique challenge of restricted smoking onsite and then over catch up at home.

Some are office workers with restricted opportunities to smoke during the day, yet manage to survive the day. Some go on long flights and manage many hours without a smoke yet race to the exit doors of the terminal on arrival, yet admit that if they had a longer flight they would have been OK.

Most smokers go all night without needing to wake for a smoke. But somehow need to smoke every hour or so when awake.

Some are construction workers or drivers who can smoke as much as they want to but if pressed can go for long periods without lighting up.

Some are people who are already suffering the ill effects of smoking. All those fear based messages are coming to life for them.

Some are stay at home parents who avoid smoking at home, and in some cases their children don’t even know they smoke. Or if they do they sometimes face the pain of standing outside while their child calls them through door, all the while wondering why on earth they are spending such valuable time like this.

Some with young babies shower after each smoke so not expose baby to their ashtray smell, some are pregnant and feel so guilty.

 You know that Sunshine Coast smokers are just like smokers everywhere, they have the same stories, the same struggles, and the same wishes and desires that smokers every have.

You want to live a long healthy life, to be able to enjoy people, places and events because you have the energy and wellbeing to do so. That’s not a lot to ask is it?

Quitting Smoking…South Brisbane And West End

Life for smokers must feel like its closing in. As in other part of the city it has become increasingly difficult to smoke in south Brisbane and West end. While cigarettes are perfectly legal to purchase you need to hide further away to have your much needed smoke during a work break or while dining out.

There are two problems here, firstly the inconvenience of smoking and secondly the idea of the much needed cigarette. Cigarettes have at times been attributed with the almost magical powers of being able to wake you up of a morning, relax you after work, calm you when you are stressed, solve your boredom and help you to think to name just a few of it’s so called benefits.

Can a dried plant rolled in paper really have all these benefits? The short answer is no.

All of those situations have come about through repeated habit. Most smokers have had between 100,000 and 400,000 cigarettes. You probably don’t want to know how many you have smokes. It’s said that to create a habit you have to do it daily for 30 days.

What do you think happens when you do an action like smoking thousands of times. You may have had a smoke with coffee, 30,000 or more times. Maybe 40,000 cigarettes to relax and of course a smoke to start every day of you smoking life.

I’m sure you are beginning to see how such a habit develops, and continues, and of course how hard it seems to be to quit. The difficulty is compounded by hearing stories from smokers who have struggled, or government ads which remind you that it’s difficult but you need to keep on trying.

Or perhaps the major pharmaceutical company whose ad for it’s product stated that you will need to try at least six times before you succeed.

All of these do just one thing. They prime you to believe it will be very difficult. My main message to you is this. You can quit smoking, you can do it, millions have and so can you. It’s a simple matter of separating out your life and routines and smoking.

This is most easily done with hypnosis. It is a simple, safe, straightforward way to make important life changing new habits which will have a profound effect long after you even forget about being a smoker in the past. Just remember you can do it. You deserve it.
