The first of September 2014 in Australia saw another rise in the price of cigarettes. This time $3 a packet and there will be even greater rises over the next four years. The price now is $20 to $25 per packet. This translates as a minimum of $1 per cigarette for even the cheapest smoke.

In four years time the tax alone for a 20 a day smoker will be $7300!

To a non smoker this sounds like the last straw, after all who would possibly spend $7000 a year on average on a dirty habit with the only outcome being bad at least.

On that same day my first clients were a couple who were spending $12,500 a year between them, and that was before the price increase. The woman was thinking about how the extra cash would improve their lives, but the guy admitted that even though they couldn’t afford it, money wasn’t a motivating factor in there quitting.

This first days of more expensive smokes has seen an increase of bookings, but that spike will dip again as smokers just absorb the price rise.

What is gained is a few extra people who quit, probably those who were ready anyway.  Of course if just one life is saved it’s all worth it. But, mostly the effect is that for those who can least afford it will be put under even greater financial pressure.

Some would say it’s a cynical exercise for a government which professes to want people to quit, that will enjoy the benefits of raising up to an extra $9,000,000 per week. Raising the collected taxes to over a billion dollars per year. Wow, what government would really want to give that up!

I’m sure there are those who really do care. Much of this money is poured into the health care system to support ill and dying smokers. The circle goes around and around, with no winners.

I must have heard it said hundreds of times that the cost isn’t a factor. And this will be true for many of you living outside of Australia where cigarettes are far less expensive.

Maybe there will come a time when nobody smokers, and not because they all died from lung cancer, but that will be a long long way off.

Who likes to start their day with a coffee? Well if you’re like me then that first coffee is essential to get going. Smokers in Toowoomba typically like to start their day with a smoke and a hot brew.

I’m sure of all have heard the frequent media reports about how good coffee is for you. The latest research shows that coffee improves life extension in all areas, with the extent of cancer. This is fantastic news.

Henry Ford once said, that if you think you can or you think you can’t, then either way you are

reasons you think you need to smoke is just making it very hard for you. You can’t quit when you
think your life is so dependent on smoking.

The first thing to do is to look at the list and just think about it. And as you start to realise that

How Toowoomba Smokers Can Achieve Their Quit Smoking Resolution

Were just a few days into 2013. Thousands of smokers in Toowoomba just a few days ago made a new years’ resolution to quit smoking. Many have already forgotten and some will have failed.

The two important questions are why is it so hard to keep our resolutions and secondly how can you make it happen for you. For many people they get very excited about their resolution, so excited in fact that just thinking about it makes them feel good, for a while at least.

Then their resistance kicks in, the problems, the past failures, the fear the lack of self belief and sometimes the perceived benefits of smoking will override the need to quit.
There are a few things you can do to help yourself.

1. Revisit your resolution, and decide that it is really something that you want to do, at a conscious level.

2. Make a list of all the logical reasons for quitting, such as health and finance.

3. Make another list of all the reasons you want to keep smoking, and for each make a note of what it is it for you. e.g I enjoy smoking, because it relaxes me. Ok so understand that if you can find another way to relax then smoking won’t be of use to me anymore. Or I smoke when I’m stressed. So if you could create ways to manage stress then again you wouldn’t need to smoke.

I encourage you to spend some time doing this as it will give you some clarity on why you are still smoking, plus you will realise that there are healthy ways to meet these same needs.

4. Decide to want more for yourself. Become absolutely dissatisfied with yourself as a smoker. Decide you deserve better than filling your body with toxic smoke.
