Quitting Smoking…How Can You be Partly Successful

A 20 per day smoker who has been that way for many years may believe it is difficult to believe they can quit easily. However using hypnosis most people can and do quit quickly, but sometimes a person only partially quits.

Perhaps they reduce down to maybe just five a day. So what is happening, it looks like it partially worked. And that’s exactly what happened. Imagine your subconscious is like a filling cabinet, with a file marked smoking.

If you only partially quit there are two possibilities.

1. The smoker was not 100% percent committed to quitting.

2. There was an important piece of information not shared with his practitioner, such as a specific trigger or a favourite place to smoke. Either way the smoker was left with a part of him or her or a file which was still active.

You could be excused for thinking that the hypnosis just didn’t work. My experience tells me that if that was the case then there would have been no reduction in the smoking at all. So what to do next? The time it takes for the client to advise me of this still smoking problem is very telling.

If they call me within a day or two it’s most likely a missed trigger, but if I’m contacted two or more weeks later, then there is a good chance that this client lacked a certain amount of commitment in the first place. This suspicion is made more solid when the person’s partner made the initial booking and was the one to follow up.

If this has happened to you then deep down you will know what happened, so you will know what needs to be done when you do a follow up session. More importantly is if you are yet to quit and either you are a little reluctant or being a little causal in your preparation.

Firstly make sure you carefully consider your history and your triggers and report all of this information to your hypnotist. Even more importantly take a hard look at your commitment to quit. Remember that you have to do this for yourself and not for your partner or anyone else in your life.

Please don’t make the mistake of thinking your hypnotist will work their magic, and all you have to do is sit back and it will happen for you. You must bring 100% commitment to the party.

Quitting Smoking…I don’t Want To Look Like A Bogan

In the words of a recent client “I’m sick of smoking I don’t want to look like a bogan anymore. According to Wikipedia in Australia and New New Zealand, bogan is a term for an individual who is recognised to be from an unsophisticated background or someone whose speech, clothing, attitude and behaviour exemplify a lack of manners and education.

This woman is a professional person who feels that smoking is completely out of character with the rest of her life. She eats well, she always looks well groomed, but when she sneaks off to smoke she feels like a bogan.

She felt she was letting herself down, but try as she might she couldn’t quit smoking. These feelings only became worse as more and more laws were enacted to make public smoking more difficult. She found herself smoking at lunch time in side alleys, as smoking was banned in the business area she worked in.

Sometimes she struck up interesting conversations with fellow smokers, but just as often she found herself with people who only re-enforced her own negative image of herself.

This is to not pass judgement, as people from every strata of society smoke, these were her thoughts, and as such were important to her. Even more importantly these same thoughts became a strong motivation for her to quit.

An increasing number of smokers hide away, from others, ashamed or embarrassed to let the world know that they are still one of the cigarettes using clan.

How do you feel when you are standing in the alley with the other smokers, or outside the cinema, or restaurant, or party or family function, in the rain, or heat or cold, or just missing out on the fun.

Quitting Smoking When You Are Pregnant

Quitting smoking at any time is critical for your wellbeing, but never so much as when you are pregnant. Obviously it’s best to quit before hand but if you haven’t managed then any time is perfect, and the sooner the better.

The important thing is to look to the future. It will serve you no good to feel guilty that you had smoked this far into your pregnancy, and it would be inappropriate for any practitioner to judge your decisions up until this point.

In my experience a hypnosis quit smoking session is different for a pregnant client. At times it can be quite emotional, and tears can flow. This could be seen as a problem for the hypnotic process. But the good news is that any physical manifestation can be used to advantage in hypnosis.

The tears can be reframed as letting go of the smoking habit, and this allows the person to relax and to focus again inside. The tears also can be seen as releasing the stress and guilt of continuing to smoke while pregnant.

This is important as the focus needs to be on the positive reasons for quitting, on not just being free from cigarettes but doing the best for your baby. So that some of the session will re-enforce the images of your blood circulating life giving nutrients to help nourish and nurture your child, to help them to develop and grow into a healthy baby.

Any focus on the effects of smoking will cause an even greater negative emotional response, potentially interfering with the hypnosis, and causing grief and stress to the client. If you are choosing hypnosis to help you quit you need to discuss this with your practitioner.

If they run a fear based negative style of session then go else where. This is your right, and your wellbeing and that of your baby must be given more importance than the ego of a therapist.

A businessman I know advises clients to buy business which are surviving in spite of their owners best efforts to mismanage them.

Most smokers when deciding to quit look at all the obvious reasons, such as boredom, stress time to think etc. These are all valid reasons but not enough to keep you smoking. You need to look beyond the obvious in order to successfully quit.

Each simple reason can be logically explained away out of existence. Because none of them actually make any logical sense. Even stress is not relieved by smoking, the only benefit comes from when the cigarette finishes and your body relaxes. The adrenal stress of course makes the stress worse.

To discover the deeper reasons, you have to be honest with yourself, try to understand why you do it. Ask yourself why do I smoke, and jot down the answer. Then ask again, pause and liste4n for the answer. Keep repeating this until you find a more satisfactory answer.

It will be, how it makes you feel, what it replaces in your life, what it protects you from, what deep benefits it offers. Just remember that the answer doesn’t have to make sense. But it will usually be important and maybe something you haven’t considered.

 1. Decide within yourself that you are 100% committed to quitting just for yourself. To do it for others is important, but it is only you, who you can fully commit to.

 2. Tell a few people who you can trust to support you that you are going to quit. These people must believe that quitting is in your best interest. They should also be the kind of people who will watch your back when you are drinking or if faced with a major life stress.

Imagine for a moment you are standing at a crossroads. You look to the right there is a wide open road, lush green grass and a few shady tress fill the pastures. The sky is blue with a few wispy clouds, the sun is warm and pleasant.

You walk easily and meet friends and loved ones, you take long easy deep breaths which fill your lungs with clean crisp air which immediately gives you a sense of energy and wellbeing. You feel a deep sense of gratitude for making the decision and following through with becoming a non smoking.

Quitting Smoking…It Just Gets Harder And Harder To Smoke

The tide is changing quickly for smokers, it’s just getting harder and harder, recently a large retirement village with over 200 houses has banned any smoking onsite from its contractors who do renovations on the empty units. I’m not sure if this is legal but it is the increasing reality for smokers.

In the city of Brisbane it is no longer possible to smoke in the large central mall, and at lunch time smokers can be seen grouped in nearby alleys.

Recently I saw a business owner being fined for smoking outside of his own retail business. This was on a busy road and not in a major shopping centre. He couldn’t believe it and was not pleased to say the least.

A client shared recently that while dining in a sixth floor restaurant he and his wife had to travel to the street and away from the building three times during their meal to smoke. This was the tipping point, as they realised that it was crazy to continue.

So what is your tipping point? When have you enough and will fully commit yourself to quitting?

Just stop reading for a moment and ask yourself. What is the benefit of smoking for me? Keep asking the same question. If you get a reason come up which you are hanging on to, such as it helps me to relax, and then challenge that belief.

e.g. say out loud, I need to smoke to relax, even though most of the world gets by without smoking, and even though nicotine is a stimulant which will always increase anxiety. Keep on challenging these so called benefits, over and over, until you are left with nothing but empty reasons which just make no more sense.

This is the start of the process, you may even think you are fooling yourself at the start but if you persist you will arrive at a point where you 100% acknowledge that there is no benefit, no upside to smoking, and therefore no reason to smoke.

You might think this is crazy, but after 160 articles, explaining why smoking is deadly, why you should quit and all the bad things that can happen to you, I decided to discuss the benefits of smoking.

This article came about after watching a couple of smokers using a floor grinder in a confined space. They didn’t use a dust mask or respirator, and it occurred to my twisted mind that there may be benefits to smoking after all.

  1. Not needing a dust mask while grinding concrete, sanding plaster or in a dusty environment.
  2. Not having to use protection when handling asbestos.
  3. No need for a respirator when handling chemicals.

I could go on and on , I think you can see the point I’m making, it’s that smoking will cause you so much pain and suffering that these other things will not seem important. Obviously you can’t risk your health with hazardous substances.

The reason for writing this article is in response to some recent clients who are dying. The have reached the point of no return and decided to finally quit, in order to have just a few more weeks of reasonable quality life.

This is so tragic, and many people find it beyond comprehension that a person can wait so long to help themselves. But it happens all too often.

Just because a smoker is diagnosed with cancer, it doesn’t follow that they will quit. What about you? What would you do?  Most say they would quit immediately and then try and live with the regret.

But hopefully you will never have to make such a decision; hopefully you have arrived at a point in your smoking life where something has to give, before you give up your life.

Quitting Smoking Sunshine Coast…Why Would You Sabotage Your Success

It sounds obvious that when someone quits smoking that they would pull out all stops to succeed. But more often than you might imagine, smokers can and will undermine their own success. This problem is not unique to smoking, it can occur in any area of life where positive change is required.

In one instance a client later admitted buying a packet of cigarettes on the way to his quit session. He smoked one and kept the rest on hand. During the session he decided to avoid alcohol for a few days to avoid beer overload problems.

After the session he felt great, didn’t want to smoke at all, but he picked up some beer on the way home. In spite of not wanting to smoke he had five that night. The next day he still didn’t want to smoke but decided to test the hypnosis by accepting two smokes that day.

Within days he was back to twenty, but still didn’t like the taste. So he returned for another session. This time we focused on possible future self sabotage, and concentrated on areas of his life where he had experienced success.

Why we block our success, even when we seem to really want the benefits is something of a mystery, but in many cases it is a feeling of not deserving, or feeling worthy of success. This is one of the most common problems we humans experience in our lives.

How To Quit Smoking…Considering How You Will Feel Is The Secret

When you think about quitting smoking, how does it make you feel. Not just on a superficial, but how you will feel on a deep level.

Will you feel happy, or relieved, perhaps in control or maybe successful? These are the most common answers I receive when I ask this question of my quit clients.

I ask this question because it is extremely important that you answer it, and that, that answer has great meaning to you.

Here is why. One of the secrets to quitting is to understand the core feeling you will experience. Lets say you choose the feeling of success. Within your Rapid change hypnosis session you will be asked to think about another time you felt very successful.

You will clearly imagine this, make the memory come alive, and intensify the feeling. As this feeling peaks,  at this point you will be directed to make a physical gesture, such as squeezing your fist ir touching your watch or ring.

This action will be connected forever to the feeling of success. Within the hypnotic process toy will be asked again to make the gesture while thinking about the past success. But now the feeling will be blended with the idea of quitting smoking, of refusing cigarettes when offered or when you are by yourself.

After the session whenever you think about smoking or see a smoker you will notice the success you feel as a non smoker.

This may sound like some kind of magic, but it works in the same way as when an old much loved song comes on the radio. You may not have heard it for twenty years, yet just a few bars is enough for your mind nervous, and biochemistry to feel  as if you were back in the days when you first heard that song.

This process is called anchoring or associations. It is an important aspect of hypnosis. Our lives are full of these anchors. The way we see the world and experience depends on our associations both positive and negative.

An example is if you decide to buy a red Toyota corolla, then you will notice a lot of these cars, but not notice blue Volkswagens. A part of your brain called the reticular activating system is responsible for this.

In life we are often confronted by conflicts, smoking is no different. Some smokers are clearly over it but for many their thoughts swing from, I want to quit, I want to smoke and back again, over and over.

It’s not that you really want to smoke, it’s that you want to experience the perceived benefits you think you receive from smoking.

This creates a conflict between your conscious desires and your unconscious beliefs. This in turn makes quitting smoking very difficult.

So how can you overcome this difficulty and free yourself from cigarettes.

Firstly I can tell how you won’t quit.

  1. By force of will. You can’t overcome this conflict by bullying yourself.  You can’t make this conflict disappear.
  2. Nicotine patches won’t change that feeling either. How on earth could plastering insecticide, that’s right insecticide, which is exactly what nicotine is, on your arms stop you from enjoying cigarettes.

Other methods don’t work any better. That’s enough for the bad news.

So the question remains as to how you can get your conscious mind and your non conscious mind to agree on on you quitting smoking.

Start to consciously analyse exactly what it is that you think you like about cigarettes.

  1. You smoke to relax, but nicotine is a stimulant, it causes your adrenals to secrete stress hormones. So it is a bad way to manage stress.
  2. You smoke to help you think, but how can your brain work properly when it is loaded with toxic chemicals.
  3. You smoke to relieve boredom, but there are a million ways to not be bored, non smokers do it everyday, and not by poisoning themselves.

 

This goes on and on, there is not a single sane sensible reason for smoking, but at some level you already know that. And if by chance you still consciously think there is some valid reason to smoke, just ask someone who is dying what they think.
