Quitting Smoking…Quit Now Quit Fast

It’s kind of interesting, that most of my quit smoking clients have smoked for many years, and it’s not uncommon for them to carry my card for over a year until they pick up the phone and book their hypnosis appointment.

At this point they just want to quit now and quit fast. And that’s just fine with me. They suddenly have the commitment, they realise it’s the right time so we jump in. Most methods of stopping cigarettes promote a gradual removal of smokes.

Nicotine replacement and pharmaceuticals fit this exact model, and it surprises me that even some hypnosis systems promote multiply visits. On further inspection this type of hypnosis seems to fit a medical model of multiple short sessions to suit consultation times.

Hypnosis can be conducted over several sessions but just cutting back doesn’t achieve anything. Another problem is that if you are told that it will take several sessions, then psychologically you know you can keep smoking until the last session.

So my view is why not just shift the quitting phase straight to the first session. Then if a client wants another session we can focus on any stress issues which they feel may well challenge them in the future.

In my opinion the extra pre-sessions serve no purpose other than putting extra cash in the practitioner’s pocket. To me it can also signal a lack of confidence on the part of the therapist, or simply this was the way they were taught, and they haven’t looked beyond that early teaching.

One client who remains my oldest client to date at 84 years of age, had never tried to quit after 65 years of puffing away. She choose me simply because I promised that she would succeed in just one session, and it seemed like it was the right time for her.

She told me she didn’t want to waste time, so just 90 minutes to quit was attractive to her. So she booked,  she attended her session and she quit successfully.

So perhaps you are reaching the point of being ready to release cigarettes from your life, now you know that it can happen quickly, so it’s up to you to take action, pick up the phone and all you need to do is bring your commitment to the session. Then just let the process unfold, and enjoy being a non-smoker for life, freeing you from the clutches of smoking forever.

Most benefits of stopping cigarettes are well known but will only reveal themselves once you have kicked the habit for good.

Some may even surprise you.

  1. Do you know someone who suffers from an auto immune disease such as Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis or Lupis. If so you will know how much they suffer. If you want to join their ranks just keep smoking because every cigarette increases your risk of acquiring such a health problem. But when you quit smoking you significantly reduce that risk.

 

  1. Unfair judgements. Whether we admit it or not we are all judging others all the time. In a way it’s a basic survival mechanism. Is this person safe, honest, trust worthy, or can I do business or have dinner with this person.

 

When someone sees you smoking or smells cigarettes on your clothes or hair, they make a judgement, and it may be unfair, it may be unjust, but it may affect your work, your business or just the way you are treated. By quitting you never run this risk of the first impression playing against you.

 

  1. Alzheimer’s is a sad condition, which has been proven to be associated with smoking, to continue you are now fully aware that you are increasing your risks. If it already runs in the family then you could be asking for trouble. You now know exactly what to do to reduce your risk!

 

  1. Who likes cold feet? Nobody really, that’s because it’s unpleasant, smoking reduces your peripheral circulation, which means you have a reduced blood flow to your feet, and a reduced capacity to pump that blood back to your heart.

 

No one can guarantee comfortable warm feet when you quit but they certainly will be better than if you don’t. But please be aware that poor peripheral circulation is the first step down the slippery road to amputation!

 

  1. If you are contemplating any surgery, then think again. Smoking compromises would healing and so it increases risk of excessive bleeding and infection. This is exactly why many surgeons refuse to operate until a smoker quits. Of course this applies to any minor injury you incur. Just quit!
  2. It has been portrayed as romantic to smoke after sex. Maybe it’s the enticing aroma, or the breath freshening effect of an ashtray. But the reality is it’s not just your feet that will suffer from poor circulation, both male and female genitals are literally being sucked dry of blood when you smoke.

This list could be much longer, but you already have enough reasons to quit, all you need to do is book your hypnosis session and get that circulation flowing again!

I laughed when a client told me that her children are making smoking miserable for her. She likes to sit outside with a glass of wine and have a relaxing smoke. But her three children had launched a campaign of disruption.

Coming out one at a time nagging her about smoking and its dangers. She said she was losing the pleasure of smoking. This was interesting because she had already told me that she didn’t like smoking anymore!

Even though she didn’t actually like the taste or smell of cigarettes, she liked the idea of what she perceived smoking had offered her in the past.

She was a little nostalgic for all of those times she had escaped her family duties by going outside and relaxing with a cigarette. Within that sentence was her true answer. The cigarette wasn’t relaxing her at all, she was relaxing with a cigarette!

Now, she has successfully quit with hypnosis, she relaxes outside in her favourite place just fine. Her children let her relax in peace, mostly, but now their interruptions are for normal kid’s reasons, not to try and protect their mother and themselves.

As a smoker you may not think about how your children feel about your habit. But they worry about their parents, they have heard lots of stories of orphans and they fear you won’t be there for them and they fear being alone.

This may sound dramatic, but it’s, how many children feel, even if they don’t voice their concern.

So not only did my client save her own life, she relieved her family of a lot of unnecessary stress resulting in a much happier family life, not to mention mum doesn’t smell like an ashtray when she comes in from her outside relaxation spot any more.

Most benefits from quitting smoking are obvious, but some are only noticed when you have been freed from this toxic habit. Such as a more relaxed happier family, what is the value of this benefit to you, to your entire household and perhaps extended family.

The great benefit of hypnosis over any other method is that these important facts can be built into the session, the negatives can be enhanced leading to the positives being deeply re-enforced into your unconscious mind.

Do you remember the Steve McQueen movie the Great Escape? He made a run from the prisoner of war camp, on a motor cycle, leaping over a high fence to finally be free. Well that is what your smokes are. Certainly not great, and definitely not adventurous by any means, but still an escape no less.

Cigarettes are a way to hide from feelings and emotions which the rest of the world has to learn to manage, or not. Some have a strategy but some turn to drugs or food or gambling etc. Cigarettes, are also artificially used to create other feelings. But these feelings are usually accessed from within if we feel good about yourself, or from natural external sources such as friend’s family or even pets.

So I’m sure you can see that by smoking you are walking through the world completely out of touch with how these feelings operate. This explains why it is so difficult to quit using the old standard ways.

Because when you try, there is a huge gap in your life. There is a strong sensation of loss and an emptiness that can’t be filled. So what happens very often is that you will start smoking again.

Hypnosis offers a completely different way of quitting, the goal is to separate you from the routines and rituals you have created for yourself while you smoked. This requires no effort and no struggle at all.

You just decide this is what you really want for yourself, you give permission for hypnosis to occur, and then you just sit back and relax with a feeling of full expectation that you will succeed.

The change occurs at a deep level, it’s as if your memories about smoking change, it’s important to note that all your other memories are completely intact. You lose the desire to smoke, the perceived benefits and you enjoy a sense of freedom.

Quitting Smoking…I Wonder What Else I could Do?

Imagine for a moment, you have made the decision, you booked your quit smoking hypnosis appointment, and now with the aid of your expert practitioner you are free from smoking.

You have just walked away from an addiction which held you in its grip for many years. You have overcome a problem which has plagued the world for over hundreds of years.

If you consider what you have achieved, you may ask yourself, if I can quit cigarettes then I wonder what else I can do. Remember you stopped a habit you believed to be very difficult to overcome with hypnosis in just 90 minutes or so.

Quitting Smoking…Whose Voice Is Controlling you.

Our conscious minds is full of hopes and dreams and plans and desires, but your unconscious mind is often directed by other people’s voices.

To successfully quit smoking you need the inner voice to be the same as the conscious voice. No I’m not suggesting you are crazy, and you’re not in a horror story but you are at effect from the influences in your life. Some of these influences are from you in your past.

Let’s say you started smoking at 14, which is the most common age of my clients. At that time you heard the voices of your peers, encouraging you to smoke. You wanted to be like them so you created the story that smoking is cool, or you look more grown up, or perhaps you felt like a rebel.

There were other voices, maybe adults who said smoking helped their stress, or their boredom or helped them to relax etc.

Then you heard some more voices which re-enforced the idea that cigarettes are hard to quit, or that they are too addicted to give up.

Some years down the track you change your mind about smoking, you now decide that it stinks, its harmful, its expensive, it’s anti-social, but your conscious efforts to quit fail because the old voices are two powerful, and too persistent, so you fail and just feel worse.

Maybe you stick nicotine patches on your body, but you notice that that the voices persist, and you realise that putting insecticide on your body couldn’t stop you wanting a cigarette with your coffee.

Even if you are one of the few who succeed this way, at some random time you will start again when one of the little voices starts again.

The single goal of hypnosis is to have you in charge of your unconscious, having the conscious desire and the unconscious voice on the same tem with the same message, therefore giving you the very best chance of success.

This is naturally occurring in those areas of your life where you have wanted to make a change and found it easy to do, no struggle, no internal battles, just smooth sailing.

You may never have considered such a question, but it’s very important that you know. You want to quit smoking but it always seems like one size fits all when it comes to stopping smoking.

Perhaps you are a fast talking person fast decision making person who adopts ideas quickly, and you prefer bullet point explanations because you’re in a hurry.

Maybe you are the analytical type and need to hear all the instructions in fine detail.

Or more emotionally based and feelings will be your key to change. Stories hold your attention and you have a powerful imagination.

Or lastly the logical type who needs proof, and a paint by numbers approach, you don’t tend to imagine a different future unless it makes sense to you.

It’s no wonder that something as simple as a nicotine patch or a pharmaceutical drug has little success for smokers.

So how does knowing your change style help you? By choosing hypnosis, the most successful quit smoking method, you have an immediate advantage. Your practitioner can pick up on your style from the phone conversation, emails or when you come to the clinic.

Recently I received an email from a business person wanting to quit. The email tone reminded me of someone speaking in short clipped sentences. There were even a couple of complaints and we hadn’t even meet.

The day before another person called, speaking slowly and deliberately giving me details of her background. I took notes because I know it will be important to her that I remember these details when she comes in for her appointment.

We all see the world in our own way, and our communication is just as individual, but there are several distinct ways we interact with the world and more importantly with ourselves.

Quitting Smoking…The Cloud Of Smoke Entry

A friend was telling me that he recently attended a major cricket match. In Australia there is no smoking, so just near the entrance to the stadium he saw a large group of smokers having their last smoke before entry.

He described it as a like walking through a wall of smoke. The smokers where trying to manage their situation, but the non-smokers thought it was disgusting. I’m guessing that some smokers couldn’t care less about what anyone thought, and were annoyed by the rules.

But I’m also sure that some felt embarrassed to have to be in that group, and equally embarrassed by contributing to the plume of smoke.

Now you could be in either group, it doesn’t worry me as long as you want to quit. Next time you see such a situation, whether you are at a sports event, or a cinema or there is a few people outside of a restaurant or function, before you join them just spend a minute and observe them. You may notice several things.

  1. Some appear to enjoy it, even if it is inconvenient, or cold or hot or rainy.
  2. Some seem to be in a rush to suck in as much nicotine quickly so that they can get back to their friends, or stop holding up people waiting for them.
  3. Some are complaining about the anti-smoking regulations, and how unfair it is to be penalised
  4. Some aren’t enjoying themselves at all but feel it necessary to load up with nicotine, even if they don’t feel like a cigarette at the time.
  5. Some are self-conscious because they feel others are judging them.

Which group are you in, and how does it make you feel, not on some superficial level, but how does it make you feel at a deep level, being a part of this group, is there where you really want to spend your valuable time.

Perhaps you would feel happier to be the person who sees this group and just keeps walking on by, feeling great because you have left the club of people who stand outside and smell like an ashtray.

When the time is right, then quit smoking hypnosis, will literally take you by the hand and easily let you wave goodbye to that group, and as you do it will feel like an enormous weight has been lifted from your shoulders, allowing you to breathe easily again.

Sounds a bit dramatic perhaps, but you know it’s true, don’t you. There’s an advertisement on television that shows a family watching a movie, instead of being in the great outdoors, and the catch cry is “that’s not living”

How about the next time you light up, you carefully consider each drag and think about how this thing smouldering between your fingers fits into your life, and of course just how much it is costing you. When you wake up and cough, I wonder what that morning ritual will offer you in the future, what pleasures await you, maybe the company of doctors and nurses and the delights of hospital food.

How about of an evening while the family is watching their favourite show and you are on the other side of the glass door, enjoying a smoke, the thought crosses your mind that you look like an actor in a quit smoking commercial, watching life through a smoky haze and a glass door.

Next time you stand outside a restaurant or cinema, catching the disapproving glances of patrons, perhaps you could ask yourself “am I having fun yet” As you hand over your hard earned cash to the shop assistant, who rummages through the assortment of brands all packaged the same green and hidden behind lock doors, just think about what you did to earn that money, how hard you worked yourself to burn some plant wrapped in paper, with a guaranteed outcome of harm.

When people lay on their death beds, it’s said that they never lament not working enough, they tend to wish they had had more fun, spent more time with loved ones, but I suspect that never has a dying person regretted not having smoked more. I suspect there is a great deal of regret directed at having done something for so long that is now robbing them of their life. What about smoking when you are bored.

Of all the many, many things you could do to fill in those gaps in your life I’m sure that with just a little thought you could do a whole lot better. If you stop and really think about these situations, or the situations in your life, in spite of you possibly liking smoking, I’m sure you clearly recognise that you are trading smoking for living. And if you have had enough of this trade off, they hypnosis can set you free.

Smoking causes cancer, smoking causing emphysema, smoking costs you a fortune, smoking is anti-social, smoking is harder to do in many environments, smoking stinks, etc. But you know all of this, and yet you are still doing it.

How does it make you feel to keep doing something that causes you so much discomfort or worry? If you are reading this I know you really care about these feelings.

Sure you might still enjoy some of your smokes each day, but you are all too aware of all the problems. Just continuing to do something that is causing you so much stress is a big extra stress in itself.

So not only do you carry the problems of smoking, you also carry the added burden of still doing it when you know you should quit. Wow no wonder you feel stressed out a lot of the time! It’s not surprising is it.

So when you quit you are freeing yourself of two distinct major stresses. The stress of smoking and the stress of not quitting! Just take a few moments to consider how this makes you feel.

I’m sure you can see that quitting is even more important than you may have realised and that the potential for feeling great is massive.

Now, what about when you have quit, perhaps you are breathing easier, sleeping better, people stop bugging you, you have more money in your pocket each week, your clothes and hair smell fresh and clean, your risk of serious illness or death is dramatically reduced, and you feel proud of yourself, having taking back control in your life from cigarettes.

Just take a few moments to consider how good you will feel, let your mind wander out past your quit hypnosis session, you are free of your old habit, you are free! Notice how good this feels.

This is the feeling that you will have as a non-smoker, sure after a while the feeling will dull as it becomes normal, but you have to admit that even a faded feeling of great is better than what you are experiencing right now.

It is also important to periodically remind yourself of exactly what it was like to be a smoker. All of my clients receive a custom CD which reminds them of the pain of smoking and re-enforces the pleasure of living their lives as a non-smoker.

Look at any anti-smoking campaign, what do you notice that all these promotions have in common. It is fear.

Fear of illness

Fear of death

Fear of affecting your family

Fear of missing out on being with other people. Etc etc

But guess what, all of these fearful advertisements have one thing in common. They don’t work!

Psychologists call it the flee effect. As in flight or fight. These advertisements create a kind of stress response that metaphorically causes people to want to run away from the message. Yes you can scare people into taking action in some ways, but smoking is not one of these.

Governments like to claim success in reducing the smoking rates with these campaigns, but think about it, as a smoker you have seen thousands of fearful images in the past and you are still lighting up.

You may be even doing it as you read this, I bet you are thinking about it, right! All the advertisements, all the restrictive smoking laws, all the plain packaging and all the price increases, won’t have an impact until you decide, once and for all to quit.

I have seen clients who have held on to my brochure or business card for up to two years. Several months is common.

I know it and you know that it has to be the right time. I’ve heard many stories of people who have gone to a therapist to please someone else. A partner, child or maybe their doctor. But almost 100% of these people fail.

Why? Was the practitioner not good enough? No the answer is simple, they were not committed to quitting for themselves, and no practitioner can make someone do something they don’t want to do.

However when you really have had enough, when you know it’s absolutely have to quit, even if you still like it, then it’s time for quit smoking hypnosis.

Quitting Smoking…Unhappy Clients

In every business, every endeavor in life there are unhappy customers. My business is no different. Years ago when I choose to help people to quit smoking as my core hypnosis niche, I knew there would be tough times ahead.

As most smokers know, most methods to stop cigarettes either don’t work at all or have only a short term success rate. So many people are desperate to quit, especially when they have turned a corner in their health.

My iChange hypnosis method is very very successful, however occasionally I just can’t help some people. Some of these I understand, for example smokers who suffer from strong anxiety can be quite a challenge.

But every now and then I can’t work it out. This troubles me, a lot. As a health practitioner I know that you have to be emotionally detached from your clients, and I also know that it’s just not possible to help everyone.

Still sometimes I agonise over these people, for two reasons. Firstly I want them to be non smokers and secondly I want to learn and understand from these failures. It is these people who have helped me to continue to develop my hypnotic process.

Quit Smoking… Will you Raise The White Flag?

The 2015 New Year introduced a new set of laws designed to further make life difficult for smokers. Resulting in them throwing up their hands and raising the white flag in surrender. Really…it’s more likely that smokers will just be annoyed and more bloody minded.

One newspaper featured a young women who claimed she covered her young child’s face whenever they came close to a smoker. Her fear seamed more appropriate in discussing Ebola. In Australian cities it’s rare to see a smoker moving in the general public.

A new government television advertisement shows a mother smoking on the opposite side of the road to her two young children who have walked out of the school gates, and stand there sadly looking at her neglecting them. It is supposed to reflect the division that smoking is causing in families, and showing the new laws which prevent smoking within five metres of the curb outside the school gates.

I get the idea, but in all my years doing the school pickup run I never saw any smokers waiting nervously sucking on their smokes, unable to wait until they get home.

Confusion reigns at the hospitals as well. There is a new fearsome blue line, to separate smokers from the rest of the world. But most smokers didn’t realise that they have to move five metres from the blue line. Logic would dictate that the line is the cut off, not some added distance that has to be calculated by some poor soul in a nicotine depleted state.

Of course we need to be protected from passive smoking. But this problem is rare in Australian public society anyway.

These changes are typical moves designed to create fear and further alienate smokers. What the government and advertising agencies don’t understand is that smokers don’t respond to fear, you already know the problems, don’t you! And you certainly don’t respond to bullying, I know that for sure.

After all cigarettes are legal, they may be in plain packets hidden behind closed doors in convenience stores, but none the less they remain legally obtained products.

In my years as a quit specialist helping many many smokers to quit, I learned very quickly that you can’t scare anyone into quitting. The decision has to come from within and the motivation will follow. Then using hypnosis we focus on the positives, the gains and the personal benefits you will receive when you quit.

Quitting Smoking Or A Failed Heart…It’s A Tough Decision

About half of the clients I see have a serious existing problem. Most common is emphysema, but some form of heart disease is second on the list. Obviously these problems haven’t spontaneously appeared causing the client to make a hasty quit appointment before it gets worse.

The question I have for you if you have a problem is how long do you live with it before you decide to quit. Or another question is for those of you who don’t have any health problems is: Do you wait until there is a problem before you take action, knowing the most likely pathway ahead.

What about that subtle cough that seems a little more persistent lately. What will be your line to cross over? How far is too far? Or do you think you will be lucky and dodge a bullet.

So what if you have that heart problem but you really like smoking, in fact you love smoking. Taking a deep satisfying draw while every drag pumps more smoke through your ailing heart.

How do you weight up the pros and cons. The weird thing is that people who in every other area of their lives are sane, might just hang on to those smokes way past the medically sensible time to do so.

So what is it about cigarettes that makes normal people act like crazy people? It seems that in spite of most not liking the taste or smell of smokes there is this elusive reward that is always promised yet usually not obtained. The feeling that is just out of reach but could be grasped if you have one more cigarette.

This is what makes smokers crazy. Ask any smoker if their cigs solve any of their life problems and they will say no, ask them if smokes really relax and they have to acknowledge that it’s taking a break which provides the break, yet there is still the illusive feeling.

This belief in this feeling is so strong that some will smoke even when they are ill, it’s so strong that an ex-smoker for years will fall back into old habits during a stressful time.

The bottom line is this, you either have your health or you don’t. You either do all you can to preserve your health or you don’t. And here’s a guarantee, that if continued smoking leaves you with a fatal diagnosis, you will feel regret. You will be angry with yourself.

Quitting smoking…The Downside Of Hypnosis

Hypnosis has been cited in science journals as the most successful way to quit smoking, yet some people remain concerned about the perceived downside of being hypnotised.

One of the most common questions I’m asked is whether I will make them cluck like a chicken. While this is often asked in jest, it can mask an underlying concern that their mind may be controlled in some way.

This is a natural worry, because most people have been exposed to television and stage hypnosis, and a lot of weird ideas, thoughts of hypnotists having near super powers.

But if such powers exist then why don’t we see headlines, stating that evil hypnotists are creating armies of zombies committing crimes.

I have to laugh because I couldn’t even hypnotise my son to empty the dishwasher without being to to.

And there is a simple reason why I couldn’t, it’s not because I’m a rubbish hypnotist, it’s because of of two of simple rules.

  1. You can’t make someone do something they don’t want to do.
  2. No one will act on a suggestion that goes against their moral code.

Hypnosis is successful only when a person wants a change in their lives, gives permission for that change to occur in hypnosis and is prepared to fully participate.

You may ask, how does it work when a hypnotist just grabs someone and says the magic words “sleep” and they slump forward. This is known as a rapid induction and some people are susceptible to this kind of instant hypnosis.

It is literally a shock to the system, not unlike when someone has heard some bad news or been in an accident and just appears stunned. But the same two rules still apply.

In the case of an accident victim it’s important to give simple suggestions of comfort.

Years ago I attended the funeral of a friend, he was thirty, died suddenly leaving behind a wife and two young children. It was such a sad event that I left in a kind of hypnotic state. At some point I found myself in a roadhouse cafe putting salt in my coffee.

At that time I snapped out of this state, and felt slightly alarmed that I had driven so far like this. Fortunately driving is mostly an unconscious action so my fellow travellers were perfectly safe.
